“Great place!”
Reviewed August 6, 2013 via mobile

We stayed at the Black Orchid for one night before we headed home. The staff is awesome! So helpful and friendly! The food was good and the rooms were nice and clean! There is a free shuttle to the airport as well. Great place!

Our group of 5 spent a wonderful week (July 20-27) at the Black Orchid. Anthony was so helpful and friendly as he picked up our luggage and some of our folks to take them directly out to the resort. I arrived with the rental car in a little later to find a bunch of happy people. The setting with the river was beautiful, but that wasn't the best part. It was a caring bunch of staff that took care of us each day. Beverly is the a hands on manager who makes sure that everything is going well. The front desk folks, Javier and Dryane, were always accomodating and helpful. All of the restaurant wait-staff were great every day. I wish I could remember more names than Kurt, Kenny and Sean...but they all took great care of us. Would we go back...you bet.

The resort is not far from the airport, it's close to the Howler Monkey resorts in Bermuda landing and it was an easy half-hour to catch the boats at Lamanai. Altun Ha was even closer. If you aren't going out to the islands..stay at the Black Orchid

While the price might be higher than anything else around Belize City, the place is sure worth it. From the bathroom at your room to the food they serve you. Also this place is great for three reasons, location, location, location. While we did not venture out to too many places, Altun Ha was under an hour away, and so is Belize City. The people were just absolutely amazing, very caring, responsive and cordial. I will admit to one fault though... My partner dropped the cell phone either at the van they contracted for us, or just outside the lobby and it was never to be found. A bummer but I guess expected. We will probably go back and stay if there is ever the chance. Definitely recommend.

Room Tip: If you are there for a while ask for a room with a fridge, some of our fellow missioners scored one...

We stayed at the Black Orchid Resort July 12, 2013. I really wished I had booked this resort for more than one night. Tony picked up our party of 5 as soon as we exited the airport. He was friendly, courteous, and efficient as he loaded up our luggage and got us on the road. Tony took us to several places to get the groceries, local cashew wine, and fruits and vegetables we wanted. Tony knows everybody around Belize City, and he was a great deal of fun as a driver. We tasted cashew fruit, bought local cheese, were advised of the best rum to buy, and felt very glad that we had chosen the Black Orchid as our base for the night. When we arrived at the resort, we were warmly greeted by the manager. She informed us that we had been upgraded to the villa, which was a 3 bedroom house just down the road a few yards. There was plenty of room for our large party, and it was so nice to be able to spread out and relax that evening. The villa had a full kitchen, and we were able to settle in. We didn't use the dining room area they had set up for us, but it was lovely. So was the wonderful air conditioning throughout the house! Our favorite spot was the porch looking out to the road. We were able to listen to all the animal life, including the howler monkeys. My husband was able to call the howlers close to the villa, which was a treat for all of us. We had a gated entrance with a guard who remained there all night, plus a friendly German Shepherd puppy who lives on this section of the resort.

The entire staff was very friendly and helpful. Our rooms were clean, we had plenty of soft, sparkling white towels, the showers had nice hot water for all of us. We saw no bugs, which is amazing when you are right in the middle of the jungle. The moths flying around the porch and the restaurant were huge. We also saw lizards and geckos of all sizes and colors. We were refreshed and ready to go for our trip to Lamanai the next day. Edder was our driver for the day, and he pointed out many things on the way to the Eco-tour dock. With both Tony and Edder acting as our guides, we had a much better understanding of the area. The restaurant food was delicious. We had meat patties and cerviche for appetizers. All five of us had different main courses, and all were excellent. Our waiter, Drayne, made sure that our water glasses were kept filled after our long day.
The Black Orchid would have the perfect place for us to stay to take more excursions, and I will book it again for a great jungle stay. One of the most important reasons we chose the resort was that they not only have free pickup and returns to the international airport, but they also held our luggage for us during the day we went to Lamanai, and had it loaded in the van when they picked us up from the tour mid-afternoon. Because they were able to offer us this service, we were able to take our Tropic Air flight two hours earlier, which gave us time to arrive on Ambergris Caye and make it to Tranquility Bay well before sunset. Many thanks to the Black Orchid staff we got to know, and the many others behind the scene. Tony, you are amazing! Edder, Drayne, and Fundisha, thank you, too. We didn't use the fitness center, and we had no children in our party, so I didn't rate those. The mattresses were firm, which I am not used to, having a waterbed, so don't know whether sleep quality is a fair question for me.

Room Tip: They are building a new addition to the property, which should be very nice. The villa was very com...

The Black Orchid is an amazing place to stay if you want to be away from the city and closer to nature. This is not a luxury resort, but it does offer clean rooms, beautiful views, great food, and a safe environment.

The Black Orchid sits next to the Old Belize River in the countryside. It is secluded, but the staff are always helpful with making transportation arrangements for excursions such as snorkeling, Mayan Ruins, or cave tubing. Kayaks and canoes are available at no charge to explore the river and see the local wildlife. A local named Jeff lives across the river and loves to talk about the history of Belize.

A new chef was recently hired and every dish we tried there was great. The entire staff was friendly and helpful. The group of nine I was with were treated like family. The property is safe to the point that there was really no need to lock your door.

Because of its location there are a lot of mosquitos. If you visit the Black Orchid bring the mosquito spray and you should be good. The good news is I never saw a bug in my room.

I highly recommend the Black Orchid if visiting Belize.

From the time we were met at the airport by Tony, the service and staff hospitality was excellent. They arranged a great tour to Lamanai and provided transportation to/from the tour (Tony again). This was our first place in Belize, and it was a nice way to be introduced to the beauty and friendliness (and great tasting Mangoes) of Belize.

We aren't too snotty with our hotel choices. We do travel a fair amount but the Jaguar House at the Black Orchid was about as low as we can go.

You could see through the cracks on the ceiling and the floorboards. Mosquitos were everywhere. The bathroom had a smell like moth balls. It wasn't pleasant.

The Jaguar House was across the street from the main part of the hotel. We felt safe as they had a guard gate but it was inconvenient to walk down the street to get to the restaurant etc.

The staff was really nice. The setting is pretty, right on the river. We canoed one morning and it was fun.

A day or two at most here is all you'd want to do unless you had trips booked out each day. Not much to do or see anywhere. You have to eat at the hotel restaurant which is good but not great.

Room Tip: Don't pick the Jaguar House unless you are alright with walking down the street to get to the ma...
