Owner description: Tswaing, meaning Place of Salt in Setswana, is a 2000-hectare heritage site, some 40 km north-west of Central Pretoria, surrounded by settlements inhabited by more than a million people, such as Winterveld, Soshanguve, Mabopane and Nuwe Eersterus. It falls within the Gauteng Province, borders on North-West Province and is part of the City of Tshwane. The main features of Tswaing are a 220 000-year old meteorite impact crater (100 m deep and 1,3 km across), a wetland (marsh) area, a variety of ecosystems and the remains of a factory that produced soda ash and salt. In geological terms, the Tswaing Crater represents one of the youngest and best-preserved small bowl-shaped meteorite impact craters in the world. It used to be known as the Pretoria Saltpan. Tswaing is a sensitive and unique conservation area for the careful and sustainable management of its multiple cultural and natural heritage resources in the disciplines of geology, the environmental sciences, biology and human history. Strong emphasis is placed on the protection and use of the area’s natural and cultural heritage for research, environmental education, recreation and community empowerment. This is achieved in close consultation with local communities, scientists, conservation agencies, private sector business and national, provincial and metropolitan government institutions. Tswaing is also know for its diverse bird species and is a popular birding area.

Great to do some outdoor hiking :) Quite interesting to get an idea as to how a meteorite has an impact.

This crater is a must for anyone interested in geology but is also a great way to spend half a day hiking in the veld. The circular walk around and into the crater is a bit steep at one point but in general it is a relatively easy walk but hot when we did it. We didn't see any of the wildlife and there were no bugs at all to anoy us. The staff are very friendly and helpful but the centre is a bit run down, like the surrounding area.

Great hike around the crater, incredible amout of bird life and sign of small few antilope (saw none). Did not see a single mosquito despite it being in the early wet season. Definitely worth a trip from Johannesburg. Take water in summer, it was 30 degrees. Met some nice folks from Zim and talked politics and religion, WTA.

You are bitten to pieces from the second you get out your car, all along the hike, and right till you get back in your car to leave. It is a nightmare.

While the staff are incredibly friendly with a great sense of humour, not one of them warned us about the mosquitos, nor does it mention this on any website advertising this hike.

The hike is beautiful but totally ruined by the scourge of mozzies that attack you. There are swarms of them and they are relentless!

It might be better there end of July, don't know, but if you go at any other time, be prepared. Wear loose fitting clothing, long sleeves and long pants - they bit us straight through jeans and tshirts. A hat with a screen to cover your face and neck is essential! Strong mosquito repellent all over your body before you put clothes on is a must.

We were going to have lunch there after the hike, it was just not an option. It's dreadful. Such a pity because the hike is really pretty.
