Description: Owner Roger Patten has been a chef for 50 years and started Penny Garden Restaurant with his wife Pam & daughter Jasmine. Before commencement of construction, old Australian pennies were discovered at the entrance to the site. This, combined with the picturesque views and a love of plants & fauna by the owners, formed the history behind the name Penny Garden. Chef Earl Mashmett has over 20 years experience in bars & restaurants in Perth and has created a fresh menu using local produce wherever possible. With gluten free and vegetarian options available, Penny Garden is happy to cater to dietary requirements. All cakes, salad dressings, sauces & marinades are made right here on the premises. Penny Garden is a fully licensed venue with good range of wine, beer and spirits and we also offer split billing. However, you may BYO wine / champagne if you wish (corkage charged at $5 per bottle). We recommend booking to ensure your table

“Good value dining - good for family parties but not romance”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed August 20, 2012

Sophisticated it most certainly isn't but that's not the market it's aimed at. It's good for families, large groups, parties etc. Definitely not romantic. It's a restaurant in a purpose-built shed next to Yahava. It does have quite a good view over a man-made lake/pond although this is a bit spoiled by a large power line.

The service is pretty basic - not particularly friendly and they don't know much more than how to take an order, bring it and clear it. Pretty basic stuff. Everything arrived pretty quickly but the mains arrived before we'd finished the starters - something I hate. And then they never cleared a couple of the starter plates. So, all a bit shoddy.

However, the menu is very big and I'd challenge anyone not to find quite a few things that they'd order. Also, I'd say the prices compare favourably with the winery restaurants up and down the West Swan Road. The quality of food was pretty good on the whole though I'm not sure why the kitchen felt they had to sprinkle salt on my son's steak or my fries. No hot sweets for Sunday lunch was also a bit disappointing - only the contents of the cold cabinet of gateaux, pies and cheesecake.

So, all in all, it's good for a big party - especially with small kids (lots of space to run around outside) - but I think it'll be a while before we return.

“Expected more”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed August 19, 2012

My husband and I went to Penny Garden for lunch to celebrate our 10th wedding anniversary. It was a Sunday and quite busy. Food came out extremely fast and tasted pretty average (could have cooked better myself) Because the service was too quick, it felt like we were rushed..... "get 'em in, get 'em out"
Not much of a view either......perhaps some trees would make the lake area more pleasing to the eye.

This is a lovely place for breakfast. Lovely view, good food, good service. I ordered the pancakes and they were HUGE! The coffee is lovely too!

“Good food in a beautiful setting but overpriced.”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed June 8, 2012

Our meals were very good but overpriced, which may come with the location. I was not expecting to be seated without a reservation as the restaurant was so busy, but the staff was able to find room for us. service was good and the staff was friendly.

“This is a very good restaurant.”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed June 3, 2012

We went there for lunch on a Sunday. Although they were very busy (full house), the chef and waitpersons did an amazing job.
The service was friendly, prompt and polite and the food was delivered very quickly.
For starters, we shared a tasting plate - which had a variety of food on it and was very tasty.
For mains we had the barramundi and lamb filo parcel. For dessert I had the tiramisu.
All of the food was really nice, beautifully cooked and the different flavours were wonderful.
It is fully licensed or BYO wine ($5 corkage).
I cannot fault this restaurant. Thank you for a great lunch.
