We took the Doolin Ferry over to the smallest Aran Island in late September, 2007. It is much smaller and slower than the ferries from Galway, but that is part of the charm. If the tide is low as it was when we went over, you may have to transfer to the ferry in a smaller boat with life vests and all. Would not recommend it for frail and elderly, but sure adds a little spice to the trip.
