B&B's are everywhere in Ireland, and Doolin is no exception. Many serve a nice breakfast, are clean and have a nice pillow to lay your head on. What makes a good B&B great is the person or people running it. There are many lovely people in Ireland, but Susan Daly is the loveliest! The B&B itself is of high quality - such comfortable rooms that are so nicely decorated, fantastic breakfasts, convivial atmosphere. But Susan is what makes it great. She's got a crackling personality, is genuinely interested in people, and wants to ensure your good time. We've been there the past two years for the Russell music weekend in February (highly recommend!) and have had a wonderful time, and am genuinely sad we can't make it to Susan's - but we will no doubt be back to Daly's.

Myself and my two regular travelling companions since returning to Ireland, James and Ben, thought we'd take advantage of the unusually mild month of October last, and decided on a trip to the rugged and wild west coast of county Clare.

After the effortless (if boring) and quick drive down the M7, we arrived at the Cliffs of Moher late-ish on Friday evening, just in time to witness the sun set below the great Atlantic horizon. There are few sights as spectacular and emotive for hobby-nationalist Irishmen as a mid-Autumn Atlantic sunset!

Like many domestic weekend breaks I undertake, this one was poorly planned. We hadn't even begun to think about where to stay. A quick perusal of Tripadvisor revealed nearby Doolin, a village richly endowed with a variety of accommodations.

Hostel? Nah. Though there were a number of well-reviewed places on offer, weren't in the mood for sharing with potential snorers.

Hotel? No. There is something inauthentic about a weekend trip west that involves staying in a hotel.

Having travelled the globe extensively, I can safely say Irish Bed & Breakfasts are the best in the world in terms of consistency, value and hospitality. If you love anonymity, then maybe you better stick with a Hotel. But for me, there is no better way to get an insight into the community you are visiting than if you stay in a B&B.

We called the top of the Tripadvisor list, and were greeted by the proprietor of Daly's House, the wonderful Susan Daly. Were there some beds available for three well-meaning Jackeens? There were! ... at least for the night.

I have rarely encountered a host as entertaining and charming as Susan Daly. Upon arrival, we were sat down with a cup of tea and biscuits, after which Susan regaled us with her vast knowledge and insights into the history, culture, music and natural geography (as well as the complex geo-politics) of the region, all delivered in her rich north Clare lilt.

We also met and were entertained by the noble George, the Daly family hound.

After a night in O'Connors (just 2 minutes stroll from Daly's) with decent grub, a few jars and excellent music, we bedded down in bedrooms finished an incredibly high standard.

Breakfast for me involved pancakes (I don't recall what anyone else said or ate – I am not at my clearest before 9am) ... lots of them. They were brilliant. From what I remember from before 9am, Susan was as exceptionally cheerful during breakfast, as she was after.

After breakfast, Susan took the time to list out all the multitude of walking and heritage tour options in great detail.

We really wanted to stay another night, but Susan Daly is a woman in high demand. The Saturday night was already booked out. We left Daly's House with promises to return soon (perhaps this Summer) and enthusiastic waves.

This is one of the best B&B experiences I have had in Ireland. The house is gorgeous, clean and has plenty of guest space outside of the bedrooms. The garden is beautiful (especially exceptional considering how windy that part of the world is), but what made the experience is Susan's seeming effortless charm and humour (though a keen observer will note she her formidable attention to every detail).

If you can get a room, Daly's is worth an extensive detour.

Room Tip: Don't do as we did. Book well in advance.

We really enjoyed our room and the food was excellent. Great service with Susan kindly packing us a lunch for one of our day trips. O'Connell's pub is only a short walk away along with some shopping. The other pubs were just a short drive away so there was no shortage of traditional Irish music and good food close by. The only drawback was that Daly's house was more expensive than the other B&Bs. We've stayed at other B&Bs in the Doolin area that were equally as nice for a better rate.

We only stayed one night at Daly's House, but this was a wonderful place to be. We were greeted by Susan and offered a hot beverage. At night, flashlights were provided so that we could walk to a nearby pub to hear some music. Breakfast was amazing, the oatmeal with Bailey's was wonderful, and we certainly ate our fill. We would definitely stay here again.

My husband and I stayed at Daly's House for two nights in September. The house itself is just a short 2 minute walk from the main part of Doolin village. Susan Daly provides private parking for guests, so there is no need to take your car anywhere when visiting Doolin village. We were given a beautiful room overlooking Susan's pristine garden and the Cliff's of Moher. Upon arrival, Susan was quick to show us our room and bring us two piping hot cups of Baily's and Coffee with Biscuits. These were much needed after a long day around the Ring of Kerry!

The room was very clean, the bed comfortable and all the amenties provided. The bathroom had a great shower and little shampoo, conditioner and soap bottles were provided. Susan is a faunt of information - she gave us tips on what time to arrive at the pub for supper and arranged our trip to the Aran Islands the following day. I loved walking back to Daly's from the village to the gentle sound of the wind off the coast and mooing of the cows in the neighboring pasture. Such peace and tranquility is hard to beat!

Breakfast on both days was divine - my husband ate the full irish and I had the porridge, which was by far the best porridge I had during our entire trip. Many other foods were available during breakfast such as: an organic cheese platter with cheeses from the local area (the blue cheese was out of this world!), scones, biscuits, fruit, yogurts... the list goes on. All of it was delicious and served in a sunny and inviting atmosphere.

On a tip from Susan, we did a lot of our shopping in Doolin Village. She said the prices would be the best in our travels and she was right! Also, within a ten minute drive from Susan Daly's are the Cliffs of Moher and many other area attractions - this B&B is the best stopping point for attractions in the vicinity of Doolin.

The best part of our stay at the Daly's House is Susan herself. She is gracious hostess and a warm and inviting soul. She could not be more polite and helpful. I would not hesitate to recommend this B & B to anyone travelling in the area and would be honored to stay here again.

Room Tip: Ask for the room with a view of the Cliff's - it also overlooks the garden!

What a wonderful experience and a warm welcome to begin our trip.Arriving in Shannon very early we found sights to see on our way but still arrived a little early. Susan was so kind and welcomed us to relax awhile and have an Irish coffee. Her recommendation for O'Connors pub was a hit with us as well. We ate there both nights and enjoyed the music. George the Border collie was a hit with us as well since we have 2. We will return to Daly's someday for sure. Thank you!

We only stayed one night at Daly's House, but were very pleased. The house is spotless and bright and each room has a king bed. Susan was a wonderful hostess. When she overheard me telling my wife that we needed to get some snacks in the village, she immediately fixed up a plate of cookies and chocolates. The house is an easy walk to the village (although calling it a village is a bit of a stretch since it is so small). I would gladly stay there again if I ever return to the area.
