“Big 5 on our doorstep”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed September 4, 2013

Some weekends away are extra special for reasons you don't expect. What impressed me most about this lodge, just 30 minute's drive out of Pretoria, was not the big 5, not the awesome 3 course dinner they served or the well appointed accommodation, but the friendliness of the staff. From the moment we walked in right to the last minute, everyone who we had contact with, was extremely friendly. Well done Mongena. Everything else was also just perfect and it is quite affordable.

We were skeptical of a private game reserve that isn't near Kruger but were immediately impressed on seeing all of the bird life as we were driving in. You know if there are birds, the bush is healthy. We saw great general game, jackals, elephants and walked up to a white rhino! They were just introducing a male lion from the Kalahari so he was still in the boma. I'm sure he'll be a great sighting one day, soon. The lodge is lovely, the rooms spacious and well appointed and the rangers and trackers were world class and knew their stuff!
The only problem we had is that they put our charges through 7 times at checkout because they didn't have a strong signal on their credit card reader. It's been over a week, and my charges are still on my card. If I don't hear from them shortly, they will certaintly hear from me!!

Room Tip: We loved our cottage. Our teenagers stayed in the twin beds upstairs. I could see that little ones...

Had the honeymoom suite - fabulous. Resident crocodile - added bonus! We couldn't fault the restaurant - excellent food and great service. Extra activities day and night would be great, though we saw team building exercises with companies that looked fun. Andries was our guide for the jeep safaris and was excellent. The tracker guy had an amazing ability to find the aminals, and up close! Well worth it and well in budget - great value.

What we liked about Mongena Game Lodge was that it is just a short trip from the cities of Pretoria and Johannesburg. With it's convenient location and excellent food, Mongena is a lovely destination for a weekend away and is also an ideal venue for business breakaways and even a wedding or similar type of function.
The only disappointment was that, on arrival, we had to lug our own luggage with not one offer of assistance - something which one can normally expect from a lodge of this standard and price. The food was however excellent and this, together with the well appointed rooms more than made up for this one small blemish to what was otherwise a lovely stay. The game drives at R200 per head were also felt to be a little expensive, perhaps the owners should consider a discount for residents and/or a bulk family discount.

Room Tip: Ask for a free-standing room...some rooms are adjoining and the sound travels through the thatch cei...

My husband and I were in SA visiting family and went to Mongena for a night away. It's a really lovely game lodge. The room was fantastic - a really gorgeous "Out-Of-Africa" vibe with the decor. The room was spotless and comfortable. The only thing we could find fault with was that they had very few tv channels.(very minor gripe) We got in mid afternoon and got checked in. We went for lunch before out late afternoon game drive at their restaurant over looking their small dam, which is really stunning, Such a relaxing view. Our only gripe was that it took a long time to get service, which wouldn't have been an issue but we got a little antsy because of our upcoming game drive. The game drive was good. Dinner was excellent. We were a bit disappointed at that our check out marred an otherwise perfect experience. We had booked via Expedia, and as one does on Expedia -paid in full up front. When we checked out we were informed that what we had paid on Expedia, and the lodges rate were not the same, and therefore, we would need to pay the shortfall. Needless to say , my husband took issue with this, as it is not our problem if the lodge does not get the rate they would like off of Expedia - this is an issue between them and Expedia. We paid the rate we were quoted. After much back and forth, the matter was settled, but it did leave a bit of a bad taste in our mouths. I would suggest that management that they not advertise on Expedia if they are not happy with the rate they receive, and not try to shift their displeasure onto their guests. Overall though, we will be back - albeit not booking through Expedia ;)

Our first time in South Africa, and first safari. Truly amazing and exceptionally good value for money. All staff were extremely firendly and our guides very knowledgeablle - Andries, Gavin and Peter - who wanted to show us as much as possible. Saw a lion - giraffes and elephants came very close to the jeep - wilderbeast, zebras, monkeys in trees etc. Did a walking safari and stood 20 metres away from a rhino hiding, behind a tree - awesome. Did a sunset cruise and saw hippos with their calf - beautiful. The food was fantasic (even though the 1st and 2nd chef were on holiday - surely they can't be better than the 3rd chef!) with a lovely restaurant overlooking the lake with a resident crocodile who perches below in anticioation of leftovers from guests! We had gluten free, vegetarian and fish but no meet included in our party - all well catered for. The accommodations and setting are very nice, especially the honemoon suite. Highly recommended!

Room Tip: The honeymoon suite is beautiful. The family suites are very large.
