“A good quality village Inn”
Reviewed November 13, 2011

The White Lion Inn at Hampton-in-Arden is a traditional country pub, blended with good, contemporary dining and snug, slightly quirky accommodation.

The pub is very much the village inn and has a lively but warm atmosphere and a good range of ales and ciders. It is popular with the locals and therefore drinks prices are reasonable. The restaurant is at the rear of the premises and has a much more modern feel to the bar. The decor is tasteful and the service friendly and informal, but still professional. Of the six dishes we tried, all were very good or better, with the rest of the menu seaming well planned. The daily specials did seem to run out rather quickly. Prices are competitive and had a good spread of cheaper and more expensive dishes.

The accommodation is split between the main building (where we were situated) and converted outbuildings. The rooms within the main building are accessed from an external, open mezzanine style staircase, which is a challenge for those wearing stilettos! Once inside, there is a wonderfully quirky corridor, with some very low ceilings, leading to rooms accessed by wooden doors of varying shapes and sizes. The rooms themselves are on the small side, but are comfortable, clean and tastefully decorated. Being part of the main building, they are affected by noise from the vibrant pub below, especially on a Saturday when the bar stays open until the early hours. Also, the church clock opposite chimes on the hour all night, but which will annoy some and charm others.

Breakfast was excellent, a varied choice also offered to non-residents, which means that the quality is good and not a mere afterthought.

The village is limited on shops, but a short trip to the quaint and excellent shops and eateries in Knowle is rewarding, more great shopping at Solihull no more than 15 minutes away. Birmingham, Coventry and Stratford-upon-Avon are all within easy reach.

In all, our stay was excellent and good value too.

Room Tip: If you prefer a quieter night, request a room in the old bakery, which is away from the main buildin...

We stayed in rooms situated a short distance across the car park from the pub. The rooms are quite small with the toilet and shower squeezed in, it's easy to walk into the bed or bathroom door as you move around the room, but the room contains the things you would expect. The White Lion is conveniently close to Birmingham Airport and the NEC but there is some plane noise as it is on a flight path.
The pub is a pleasant place for a meal with good beers and interesting food.

We stayed at this lovely pub 2 years ago for an NEC event and had a very poor experience. Now the new management have returned the place back to a very friendly village pub, good food and excellent accommodation.

It is the perfect place to stay for the NEC. 5 minute walk to the station, 3 minutes on the train to the NEC. Trains are regular and run late in to the evening.

This is a perfect village inn with church bells chiming and traditional beers. This is not a plastic gin palace it is the real thing.

Room Tip: Rooms at the front are affected by traffic noise but this is a quite village it is not the M1 outsid...

we'd booked one night through groupon which made it excellent value for money. This is a lovely old village pub decorated in a contemporary way which for me really worked. Its not clear where you check in so went through the nearest entrance to the car park which takes you through the restaurant. Plenty of staff who quickly sorted out our key and took us to our room. We were in the converted outbuildings and the room was small but simply decorated with crisp white bedding and fluffy towels. We had a drink in the bar and a meal all of which was good value for money. The starter (smoked salmon salad) could have been improved with a dressing but the spiced cod goujons were perfect. The staff were friendly and wanted to ensure we were comfortable.Breakfast in the morning was traditional english and part of the price. We live locally and would definitely visit the pub and restaurant again. Overall a great experience and good value for money.

We have just returned from The White Lion feeling very relaxed and refreshed after a really lovely one night break courtesy of Groupon.

Our welcome on arrival was professional, polite and informative. How you would expect it to be. Remember this isn't a chain, it's a beauitful old coaching inn with bags of charm, character and friendly staff.

Our room was a little cottage room in a charming out building across from the pub carpark which used to be the bakery. Despite the room being a little on the small side it was incredily cosy. I loved it and so did my husband. The decor of the room was very modern with almost a feeling of being by the seaside! Very clean and very tidy.

Dinner was delicious. The chefs you could clearly tell took a lot of pride and care in what they did. A lot of thought in the actual recipes and presentation. I had the Coq au Vin and hubbie had the Fillet Steak. Both superb. The ales in the pub MUST be tried. We found them very tasty. Dessert was an absolute treat. I had the chocolate cheesecake and hubbie had the banofee pie. Both were homemade and again you could tell the chefs thought about a unique way of providing a dessert. Amazingly tasty! Breakfast this morning again was lovely. My husband thoroughly enjoyed the full English. Portions at this place aren't on the small side so make sure you go with an appetite.

The ambiance in the White Lion was lovely. A place where locals and new folk enjoyed the relaxing charm of a very old pub/restaurant.

At the end of the day we went with no expectations and were pleasantly surprised. Thank you Ellie and team for an enjoyable stay.

Just one small thing: the bathroom sink was very small in the room but to lean in and use it properly was virtually impossible due to the glass shelf above the sink. A great height to hit your forehead on whilst cleaning your teeth etc. Could be moved so as not to cause injury to guests! :)

We booked one night bed & breakfast with a groupon voucher. If we had paid full price we would have felt ripped off. The White Lion is a lovely pub and restaurant with a warm atmosphere and so much potential. Upon arrival in the wind, rain & dark, parking at the back was free but there was not any clear signage to a reception. We ran with our bags into the front entrance which turned out to be the pub occupied by a few locals and plenty of staff. We were unsure where to check in so managed to get the staffs attention in the restaurant area. Although the staff were friendly and had our reservation, they seemed disorganised and casually dressed mainly in jeans and portraying a sense of unproffesionalism. It took four staff to find our room key and eventually we were led outside to a converted outhouse. Unfortunalety on attempting to unlock the room it turned out another couple were already occupying it so we were led back to the main building to sort out the confusion. There were no apologies we were just told the manager was away at the moment. This time we were handed a different key and given directions to another room outside and sent off to find it ourselves. The room was unfortunately very small and freezing cold. We felt like we had paid to stay in a fancy potting shed!! We considered asking to move rooms but my husband got the radiator working and it soon started warming up. We decided to have a meal in their restaurant and take advantage of 10% off the food bill. We seated about 8.30pm as the restaurant takes orders up until 9.30pm. Again the staff were nice but casual and we had to ask what the soup of the day was and there was not a fish dish of the day as advertised. On the board where two specials gammon or chilli, however the chilli was crossed off. Our starters of brushetta and black pudding St Malo were a pleasant suprise and my steak and mushroom pie was packed with meat and really tasty. They also had no problem serving the pie with chips instead of new potatoes. However, my partners haddock had many bones and was served with onions, sliced potatoes and literally half a plate of limp mixed leaves out of a bag. The chef had not even dressed them or disguarded the clearly passed their best salad leaves.. When we mentioned this to the staff she simply said sorry. We realised that the chefs lazy and unpassionate accompanyment was due to him being in a rush to finish his shift. We were the last table eating & we spotted him driving off shortly after 9.30pm probably pleased we hadn't opted for dessert and kept him any longer!. We managed to sleep well and went back to the main building next morning for our breakfast.which was included. Unfortunately there were no staff to great us and another two couples equally unsure of what to do had arrived before a gentleman finally appeared and took our order. (no menus offered). Once again he was polite but dressed in jeans and trainers which didn't match the ambience of the restaurant. The full english breakfast was ok but not impressive. On our way out the chef was smoking outside the kitchen door right next to the restaurant entrance which also looked a little wrong. All in all the experience has left us wishing we hadn't bothered and I wouldn't recommend it except for a drink as the locals seemed to be enjoying the bar. Perhaps we expected too much but Groupon voucher or not, we wouldn't stay again.

Room Tip: Wouldn't recommend rooms outside the main building.

We stayed here for one night and had no problems at all. The atmosphere was very welcoming and on arrival the staff were helpful and pleasant. Dinner in the evening was really good and the full English breakfast didn't disappoint the following morning. The rooms were in keeping with the period of the building and the bathrooms were refurbished well and didn't feel pokey. The only negatives (and we are really struggling to find any here) were that you have to go up and down the fire escape to move between rooms and restaurant - not so much fun in the rain, especially when the fire escape door is somewhat stiff! Overall though, excellent value for money, really friendly and attentive staff- would definitely come back!
