This venue isn't fit for purpose if you're wanting an evening party or wedding reception party. The reason being is that your DJ/Disco has to plug in to the venues sound limiter which is compressed at 85db - you can talk louder - hence the music is no more than background music = zero atmosphere. Avoid evening 'entertainment' at all costs if you want a decent party.

Recently visited this location and had a lovely day. Was meet by a friendly lady at the counter where you pay. Grounds were very tidy and was nice to walk about the rooms without and rope stopping you from walking about certain areas. Very clean and tidy house and gardens with wildlife to see. Plenty of seating in and around the grounds and bins for your rubbish. Also I felt that the entry price was just about right for this attraction.

All large houses and gardens take a lot of upkeep and obviously ways must be found of drawing in sufficient funds to maintain them. However, certain places, and Michelham Priory is one of them, are best enjoyed "as they are" so hopefully funfair type activities will be kept to the minimum. The gardens were looking particularly lush and the atmosphere tranquil on the day of our visit and it was lovely to see mother duck and eight tiny ducklings on the moat. The shop could perhaps have more items for sale (home made cakes, biscuits, chutneys etc) and the teashop would be all the more attractive with a makeover: something to reflect the antiquity of the place: old-fashioned crockery, lacy cloths, home made scones, using flour from the fascinating mill nearby. Tea with the wow factor would really enhance a visit. However, a lovely place to visit.

I telephoned before our visit to check on access for our friends who were with us and us mobility scooters.
"No problem! They will even be able to drive over our moated entrance."
Every part of the site is accessible except the upper floor of the house. All round the grounds, no problem at all.
The tea room/café served lovely fresh scones and cakes, and at a very reasonable price, unlike some sites we have visited.
The grounds. house, everywhere is beautifully maintained.
You cannot fail to enjoy every moment there.

This was not my first visit to Michelham Priory and it probably wont be my last! This place has so much history without being boring. It has volunteers who really know their stuff and are always pleased to share it with you if you want, but leave you alone if you don't. There is something for all age groups and you can spend all day here once you have paid the very reasonable entrance fee (and there is enough to fill a day). There are ramps for the not so mobile and assistance from the staff if you need it. The grounds are perfect for a picnic, and no-one minds if you take your own food, although the café is very reasonably priced with friendly staff. The toilet facilities are very clean and all on one level. If I have just one gripe it is that they do not have a scheme where you can just come in to use the café. It would be so worth their while to work something out for those who just want a hot drink in such a peaceful tranquil area.
