Irrespective of the dated outlook and appearance of the restaurant, the Sunday carvery is outstanding value and usually of very good quality. Its a shame that some of the tables are sited in
uncomfortable areas due to poor lighting, or low natural light, because the food served is very good. The Afan tavern does not have delusions of grandeur, it is a traditional old local pub, which serves up some very tasty good value food. You'll have a good selection of roast pork, turkey and beef, and help yourself to the variety of hot veg trimmings and wholesome real gravy, sauces etc. If you have room after all that, the hot desserts are served brimming, and all very generous in proportion. Excellent pub food indeed - very satisfying and easy on the pocket!

I think my partner and I must have picked a bad night to eat at this pub judging by the other posts here. To say it was awful would be an understatement. We decided to eat out here after looking at the website, which actually bears little resemblance to what greets you when you enter the restaurant. Initially it gives the impression of an 'old men's local' from days gone by, with bar on one side and 'restaurant' on the other. The place was dirty, with bits of food on the floor and dust on the fittings. It would be nice if someone could go around and check under the tables themselves as there were more than half a dozen balls of chewing gum stuck to the undersides..........a sure sign that they are not cleaned properly, and very off putting and unhygienic. The toilets were also dirty, and the one I went to looked as if it had remnants of vomit on the rim.
Onto the food itself. Firstly the actual menu was really sticky and we had to prise it apart as there was so much food on it. I ordered the special of cockles and laverbread as a starter which was cold. My partner had the chicken strips which came with sauces which were served in the little paper containers that you serve yourself ketchup in at a famous fast food chain. Hardly professional. My steak was reasonable, but by no means could be classed as the medium rare which I'd ordered, my partner's Reggae, Reggae sauce would have been unrecognisable to Levi Roots! Dessert was average. When paying my bill the lady behind the bar asked if we'd enjoyed our meals, and I voiced my complaints to her. She didn't really comment, or offer any sort of apology. The website also doesn't say that the restuarant hosts football matches on the wide screen tv which was near our table. When we were halfway through our meal approx 12 youths sa under the screen in readiness for the match to start using foul language, no attempt was made by management was made to stop them.
If you want to sit in a dirty pub, amongst youths swearing, eating less than average food, then this is the place for you. My advice would be to pay more and go to a proper restaurant.

If you want a excellent meal for a real good price look no further had the mixed grill for £13.99 and it was cooked to perfection a excellent choice on the menu and a beer garden with kids play area at the back. The service from the staff is fantastic, only one problem you will be lucky to get a mobile signal.

Great quality food at unbeluevably good prices.
Lovely salads. Great burgers. Curries really varied on wed nights. Good beers and fruendly staff. Most msins under £6 which is incredible.
Dont exect romantic surroundings though if youre out for at sort of meal.
