“Off the beaten path ...”

This place was less expensive than other rental places closer to the tourist attractions and tourist oriented hotels and lodgings, for a good reason. If you have more time than money, and are not into doing touristy stuff but just want to hang back and chill out, this might be the place for you.

The location of the place is about an hour drive south from the Kona airport and generally in opposite direction of where you need to go if you want to do tourist activities, like deep sea snorkeling, helicopter tours and attending a luau. As a result, we spent lot of time driving, more than we’d like. Actual property is located in a blue collar-like neighborhood with extremely hilly access roads to and from the main highway. Although the house is close to the water and the ocean is visible, you cannot just jump in for a quick swim as the access to the beach is greatly hindered by the volcanic rocks.

The beach house is fairly well-maintained with additional towels and sheets and well equipped kitchen. The laundry room has beach gears that you can use. Beds were comfortable for most part, no worse than typical beds you find in most homes as a guest. My biggest complaint of the property was the lack of air conditioning. While it wasn’t blazing hot when we stayed in June, we would have still preferred the option of having AC. There is a outdoor gas grill on upper patio (there are two patios, one downstairs too). Main living quarters are upstairs; if you are disabled or otherwise have difficulty navigating stairs, this place might not be for you. If you like cooking for yourself, the place has the necessary utensils and some disposable goods, as well as spices and condiments. Walmart, Safeway and Costco are on the way here from airport. Instead of buying everything you think you might need, just get the food items and then come and take stock of what else you might need and see what’s available here.

If you are here for first time and not sure about where to go and stay, I would suggest staying closer to where all tourist attractions are, either northwest (Kona) or northeast (Hilo) areas.

The drive down to the ocean will be something i will tell for years to come. Awesome accomodations and very comfortable living. Very updated. Awesome walks on very nice paved trails. Ocean was just wild when we were there. It was very entertaining watching the waves hit the wall and splash up. Not a close drive back to Kona but a relatively short drive and straight road to Oceanview with a nice grocery store and liquor store and very nice cafe and coffee shop. Had a 1 year old along and was perfert. Wonderful secured decks with grill.

If you don't like crowds, nor care to be with the ones that need to be seen, this is the place to be. You make your own fun with hiking, swimming, snorkeling, cooking for yourself, laying back and getting the feel of the non-touristy version of the big island. You should be aware that restaurants, gas stations, and grocery stores are 10 miles or more from this location, so plan accordingly. And if you are already exhausted from a full day of airports, airplanes, taxis, etc., then be ready for another hour and a half drive down winding mountain roads at slow speeds. Two lanes, with very few opportunities to pass. I am not saying it's not worth it, because it is once you arrive, but you can't be in a hurry to get here. And it's a neighborhood village that doesn't appreciate visitors driving fast in their area. We like it a lot.
