“penquins emerging from the sea fantastic”

Katiki Point Lighthouse

Attraction details
Recommended length of visit: <1 hour
Owner description: Katiki Point is home to New Zealand fur seals and Yellow-eyed penguins, along with many other coastal species. It is cared for by volunteers who have created a sanctuary for penguins. They optimize the habitat, maximise breeding success and survival and minimize disturbance. They need $20k per year to do this work so a donation of $5 pp is appropriate. The donation box is by the gate. The reserve is open from 7:30am to 7:30pm. Visiting outside this time creates stress on the penguins and in the past, has cost the lives of chicks so please respect this. Do not use a flash on your camera and do not go closer than 5 m to the wildlife. Retreat if they move towards you.

“Great hide for yellow eyed penguin viewing”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed September 26, 2013

Best to go at sunrise or 2 hours before sunset between August and February to see penguins. Habitat lovingly restored by former lighthouse keepers.

“Lighthouse visit a must”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed July 28, 2013

Following advice from other holiday makers, we visited the lighthouse just south of Moeraki township. The drive to the lighthouse is a bit rough over a lengthy gravel road but is well worth it. We finally came to the lighthouse, dropped a donation in the box then wandered down to the cliffs to look at the scenery. We were happy to see there were loads of seals under the cliffs, on the rocks, the beach and in the water. We watched them for a while as they are quite comical at times. The views of the ocean and surrounds are pretty special too. So nice to see things by yourselves and in their natural habitat. Take a camera for lots of photos and wear walking shoes as the ground is rough in places.

“Amazing encounters, great place”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed June 20, 2013

We were so surprised to find so many penguins and seals in that place. We visited this place late in the afternoon. Some of animals were standing/lying right across the path. You could stand face to face with these beautiful and curious penguins. Apart from watching animals this place offers quite nice views on the shoreline and sea. We found Katiki Point to be one of the highlights of our trip to NZ (and it's for free).

“Loved the penguins!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed May 10, 2013

We had a great experience here where yellow-eyed penguins (one of the rarest in the world, I learned) walked right up to us while we stood still yards away from them. We did not approach them but they were very curious and approached us. The view here is gorgeous and the penguins are a plus!
