Centara Grand Island Resort & Spa Maldives
Certificate of Excellence
Reviewed February 24, 2010

This was our first trip to the Maldives and it didn't disappoint. Having talked to other guests who had visited other islands in the Maldives, it was clear that Centara is a cut above the rest. We stayed in a Beach Suite which was fantastic. Lots of space, comfy bed, huge bathroom and access directly onto the beautiful west facing beach. The food in the main restaurant was great, as were the all inclusive house wine and sparkling wine. We also tried the Thai restaurant which was of a very high standard. It is possible to have a private Thai cookery lesson with the chef of the restaurant. The snorkelling is great on the reef surrounding the island, so there is no need to venture further afield unless you want to. The spa services are expensive but very good. Although an additional 10% service charge was added to the massage which wasn't made entirely clear at the time. The staff at the resort are very attentive and friendly, without being intrusive. We would highly recommend Centara and can't wait to go back!

We recently stayed at Centara for nine days (early Feb.). Prior to our trip we had read all reviews on this resort. 90% had thumbs up, so our expectations were very high too. I will not go into details and give a repetition of what have been stated in other reviews that describe Centara Grand Island Resort and Spa as an Excellent resort – because it is a truly an excellent resort! Other reviews are better-written, very rich in detail and I completely agree with their praise.

However, it is interesting that Centara Group rates this resort a 4 star – Don’t know if it is compared to the other Centara resorts, or if it is the expected level that this resort will reach in the future, when it has been up and running for year or so. Right now Centara Maldives is definitely more than just a 4 star resort.

Maldives is a fab destination. Crystal clear waters, lovely beaches. Centara Island is a great location with great accommodation, great dining, great snorkelling – it has everything that makes this a luxurious, top exotic holiday resort.

If you are in doubt of what to choose in terms of accommodation – do like the Chinese and change room every second day…. The biggest choice is a) island accommodation or b) water villa and what kind. We picked the Family deluxe water villa (only 9 of this kind), because we are a family of three. It was an excellent pick and suited us perfectly.

The Family Water Villa consists of basically of one huge room with room dividers halfway towards the ceiling, i.e. wall between bedroom/living room is partly a wardrobe, accessible from either side or a bookcase on one side, shelves on the other.

The room divider between child/teen zone is of matted glass, and in that zone you find a long desk, two chairs + play station 3. Two bunk beds each with “window view” towards the island.

The terrace is huge and continues round the house on one side where you also find the out door, heavenly rain shower – Wonderful! On the terrace there is a nice, big sofa, huge floor fatboy cushions, and a table/chairs for 4. Direct access to reef and great snorkelling! Take care – best at high tide.

In our opinion, the Family villas seem to enjoy more privacy that the other villas. There is sun on terrace from sunrise to late afternoon.

Extras: Island Club or not. We did not take this option. Instead of upgrade – we sort of spend the same amount on spa visits, boat trips or whatever wine or restaurant we wished to dine at. If you were Island club, you still have to pay extra for a specific wine, or i.e. if you wish to dine Teppanyaki at the main buffet restaurant etc. We couldn’t of course join the separate pool or Island club area, but it was something we did not have a need for anyway. The Island Club option is $50 per person per day. If you are on the normal “all inclusive” you have one free dining at one of the restaurants, additional visits $40 per person is deducted the bill.

We used Virgin Holiday as agent. Fine enough, only disappointment was that we booked our package in September. For some reason the airline rescheduled the flight so it flew 8 hrs earlier…. They kindly put us on a later flight, but it was very difficult to get in touch with Virgin. Apart from this “the package” was o.k. The 2,5 hours waiting time for seaplane transfer at Male airport, that was a bit long – however I do not believe that was Centara handling/planning. It was not a problem, though.

Upon arrival to Centara we were told that we have been upgraded due to occupancy – sounded interesting, but that was some kind of misunderstanding, because we specifically booked a family deluxe water villa, therefore no “upgrade”…

Improvements? Can Centara improve anything? If I were to complain about a little thing, I would say that the air condition in the villa is too noisy for a hotel of this standard! That goes for the ceiling fans as well – seemed as a very low budget solution. I used earplugs, but would have preferred not to.

The reef is the absolute major attraction. Not all guests respect the reef environment and some guests are seen crawling, walking the corals. That is sad. It would be an idea to place a sign in various languages on the villa’s exit doors, clearly stating reef manners – and in clear language “Do not… and it is forbidden to…”. Today such paragraph is found, in English, in the information file in small writing at the back.

Another suggestion could be to place a Centara beach bag in every room.

Hints:
Bring your own adaptors if you come form Northern Europe – plugs are UK standard. The adaptors do not fit the Northern European plugs.

A mosquito plug can be useful – there is a bug spray in the room, but a plug is better.

I asked if there were sand flies, and was told that there had been some. Bring your own repellent if you are very sensitive to bites. It was NOT a problem during our stay.

A piece of advice: if you can, let the reception assist checking you in for home bound journey, if you cannot do it yourself. We were picked up too late at the island. Taken by speedboat to nearby island where seaplane waited. We arrived very late at the airport, but made it due to very efficient ground staff from the airline (Qatar) that made it possible to jump the queues – luckily we had checked in online a day earlier.

The Centara staff is dedicated and eager to make your stay a wonderful and memorable one! The staff plays an important part in the Centara success. The beach staff that has the ungrateful Sisyphus task of clearing the beach sometimes twice a day for corals, pebbles etc. are really working hard, so we visitors can enjoy the beach – they too make a difference. It is a struggle against nature really, much appreciated. In that perspective you can really see what it takes to run perfect resort. Wind, water, sun are hard on all materials, the metal spotlights, and especially the wooden walking areas are clear reminders. Even the recently finished “boardwalks” have planks that bend with loose nails or screws that need urgent attention; otherwise it will be quite dangerous to walk barefooted or in slippers. It really shows what forces the resort is up against, but I am confident that the management are aware this little, yet important detail.

What a really lovely place - we had a fabulous holiday. Just 7 days - I wish it had been more. I only went for 7 because I though I might get bored - I needn't have worried. Despite it being a small island, there is plenty to do - and the whole pace of life is comfortably slow and chilled.

The hotel is very comfortable. Rooms are very spacious and comfortable. Food was excellent - couldn't fault it. We tried all 3 restaurents and they were all good. Watch out for the chillies in the Thai one though...hot, hot, hot!!
We tried the spa - which was expensive, but very good.
We used the gym which is clean and well equipped.
We went out in a kayak which was fun.
We went for a trial dive from the Dive Centre and the instructor was excellent - very patient and his English was faultless. We saw a white tip reef shark whilst we we down which was quite exciting. And then we saw 2 or 3 more when we were snorkelling later in the week.
We spent hours snorkelling and it was was fantastic - the sea is so warm and the marine life is so diverse and so abundant - its like swimming in an aquarium. The reef is fantasitc - lots of giant clams, fish of every shape, size and colour. And that is just swimming from the balcony or from the beach.
If you get bored swimming in the sea - the pool is lovely too and, because its long and thin, you can have a decent 'fitness' swim in it as well - it must be getting on for 25m.

Anyway - if you are interested in the detail here it is....
We travelled to Centara Grand with BA from Gatwick and the flight was fine. We had to wait for about an hour or so for our sea plane but the facilities at the terminal were good so no problem. The sea plane trip to the island was a real experience, giving wonderful views of the beautiful islands, reefs and sand bars below. Not to be missed.
We were greeted by the hotel staff on the very elegant hotel boat and taken to the shore. Check in procedure was pretty slick and after completing some simple paperwork were shown to our room in just a few minutes.
We went for a Luxury Sunset Water Villa - and we were not disappointed. It was very spacious and comfortable. The bed was really comfortable - I'm normally pleased to be back in my own bed after a couple of nights away, but not this time - it was really comfortable. The bathroom was very well equipped with a stand alone bath and a great shower.
Sound quality on the TV wasn't great but we were so chilled out that we didn't care!
Outside the seating and sun beds were comfortable but they could have done with more shade really - the sun was very powerful and the sun shade needed to be bigger. We had steps down from our 'patio' into the sea. We had an upstairs balcony as well - but we didn't use it much - it was a bit too hot most of the time. The air conditioning was a God send - I think it would have been very uncomfortable without it. There were no nasty bugs - I did get a couple of little bites - but nothing much - and I'm normally a real bug magnet. I think this was one of the benefits of the Water Villa.
The staff were without exception very friendly and helpful. They clearly make a really effort in this respect and it helped to make us feel very welcome.
We had a truly wonderful holiday. I have never yet gone to the same place twice - there are just too many places in the world to see - but I really will go back here, and when I do I'll do a PADI course and try to see some Whale Sharks and Manta Rays - others in the hotel with us did see them - I was very jealous! And I'll stay for 2 week next time!

If you are thinking of a trip to the Maldives, then I would definitely recommend this hotel - you will be very well looked after.

Food First - Fantastic, really fantastic! There was not a meal we didn't enjoy - we have travelled worldwide and this is the best hotel/resort food we have ever tasted - every mealtime we tried different things and everything was great, the chefs should be congratulated, we would return just for the food. The restaurant staff made things memorable, tables always spotless, glasses never empty, big smiles and polite enquiries. Thank-you Ali, Shira, Jaleel, Ruth and all the staff, too many too mention. The Thai and the Italian were also very good.
Accomodation - very comfortable bed, big bathroom (we were in a deluxe water bungalow), exceptionally clean thanks to Henry our houseman who delivered clean fluffy white towels twice a day and kept the place so neat and tidy. He was very friendly bur unobtrusive, brought us coconuts, made us a flower bed, gave us a parting gift and did many other things to make our stay comfortable and hassle-free. He also came to turn our bed down in the evening, we didn't know how he managed to keep things so clean as we hardly ever saw him.
As for entertainment, we come to The Maldives for peace and quiet, rest and relaxation, so not looking for anything and quite pleased that it was limited. However, we did visit the Coral Bar a couple of times where Wakrim is full of good chat and makes a mean cocktail Our favourite place though had to be the Aqua Bar, and our #1 barman, Shimol, who made us cocktails late afternoon as we watched the sun going down and caught a little breeze. We would return after dinner each night and he knew from day one exactly how we liked our drinks and started preparing them as soon as he saw us. We miss him, he helped make our holiday very special. Husnee, the Maldivian Philosopher was also on hand sometimes for a quick chat. The Aqua Bar is always spotlessly clean, cushions plumped up - a real oasis of calm.
Spa - very, very, good, maybe the best I have experienced.
Snorkelling - even better than our last visit, we were in three times a day (at least)!
Normally mosquitos are a problem for us, even in Florida, we didn't use anything at all and didn't experience a single problem.
We could only find one thing to complain about - no library - they took this on board and there should now be a library in the Tennzone - they also supplied us with a selection of books for our stay.
Hamish and his team are working very hard to make this a high standard resort, I think they have already achieved it, wuld recommend to anyone. What makes it so good (apart from the fact it's The Maldives!) is the staff and the food.

We stayed at Centara for our honeymoon and loved every minute.

The seaplane is an experience in itself and we did not have to wait very long on either journey. The views as you fly over the islands are beautiful.

We stayed in a deluxe water bunglalow and were very pleased. The bunglalow is spacious with a lovely large (bigger than uk superking) bed, sofa, tv and a great bathroom with shower and jacussi bath overlooking the sea. We found the bunglalow just right for us as you had the privacy on your own outside area to sunbathe on loungers but you could also go to the beach.

The entire island is surrounded by a reef with lots of colourful fish and coral and I could happily spend a few hours out snorkelling. There is also canoes and pedalos to use.

The food here was lovely too, even though it was buffet style they cooked a few dishes to order in front of you. the staff were the friendliest too and began to say hello to you even by name.

I would definatly go back and would highly recommend to others.

We stayed at Centara for 7 nights. It was our first visit to the Maldives and it is just the most amazing place, just like paradise.
The seaplane transfers were really good both ways and we didn't have to wait very long at all.
We stayed in a beach villa and it was fantastic. It was very spacious, comfortable and clean. It's like having your own house. The real benefit was that right outside your front door was your own hammock under palm trees which you could use to avoid the midday sun and then the beach so you could go back & forth into the villa whenever you needed anything. The gym was also great, overlooking the sea and the equipment was good.

The food in the buffet restaurant was really good. We also tried the Thai and the Italian, both were nice. We choose the Thai as our all inclusive option and then used the $40 credit per person to go to the Italian. However we both ordered a pizza and the cost didn't exceed the credit we got so we didn't end up paying anything additional.
The evenings were a bit quiet and it would of been nice if there was more entertainment, however we had a few drinks each night and it was very chilled. The staff are also very friendly and helpful.
Centara really is a fantastic place and great for a relaxing holiday.

Five minutes earlier and we were at 4000 feet, but now we stood on the floating platform chatting with our bare-footed pilot awaiting the water taxi as it was closing in to complete the final leg of our journey to Centara Grand Island.
As we chugged toward the island at a leisurely speed, the red, white & black Maldivian Air Taxi behind us skipped along the waves and in a matter of seconds it was airborne en-route to its next strip of paradise.
We were greeted by the ever smiling and friendly staff at the reception which is along side the Aqua bar where a welcome drink was waiting. In no time at all we were taken by golf buggy to our beach suite. We would strongly recommend numbers 19 to 46 as this side gets the sun most of the day and you can watch the sun retire each night beyond the sunset villas. Our home for the week was No. 36 and the nautical theme of each and every suite with the blue & white colour scheme was very well presented. The lounge area is bright and airy with the high ceiling fan above cooling the interior. A large cushioned seating area for 4 people and the 'techno' equipment is more than adequate.
Flat screen TV & a Philips DVD palyer featuring surround sound. There are free DVD's available from reception. If you are taking an i-Pod there is no need to take extra speakers as you can hook up with the MP3 link via the cable supplied.
For $5 per day you can also have Wi-Fi access for your laptop computer in your suite or in any of the public areas on the island. Each day you only have to request a new code.
Remember, do not use your phone to access the internet as it will cost you the price of your holiday!
The rear half of the suite is thru sliding frosted doors and houses the double wardrobes along with a digital safe, a dressing area, washbasin & mirror, glass encased shower and separate toilet and beyond this in the garden there is a large white 6 foot diameter bath with rain shower.
The galleried bedroom upsairs has great appeal, air con & ceiling fan, flat screen TV and ensuite toilet. The seaside themed ornaments are throughout the suite with anchors, seagulls, shells, starfish and lighthouses. There are also 3 pin sockets so there is no need for any additional adapters.
The best part of the suite though is the view thru the palm trees to the white beach and should you be lucky enough you may have a hammock just off the decking area for the two of you to relax in to avoid rays of the midday sun.
As you meander down to the waters edge dip your toes in and look back towards your suite and keep your eyes peeled for the fruit bat which normally swoops around anytime after 4pm. It is a joy to watch, especially when it hangs upside in the palms only a few feet away. It's wing span must be at least 3 feet if not more when it takes flight.
With your sand encrusted feet before you step back onto your decking there is a little ritual to undergo, but you will experience it when you are there.
To explore the island will take you as long as you wish, but to amble around the waters edge anti-clockwise from this suite will take you no more than 10 minutes. You will see the family villas out on stilts, hammocks, the Spa, beach suites with pools, the Reef restaurant, the Coral bar and once inside you must check out the games area upstairs with its table tennis, pool table, snooker, Nintendo Wii, games consoles and computer with internet access, (the computer here states $2 per hour).
Beyond the coral bar is the dive centre and the gymnasium with it's great view out to sea and to the neighbouring island in the distance. This side of the island tends to be more exposed to the wind, but it's great to stand on the steps leading down to the water just behind the dive centre. Carry on along the beach past the volleyball net and the deluxe water villas become ever closer. Mind your head as you pass under the walkway and to your left is the Island Club lounge & pool. We shouldn't make any comments about the Island Club as we did not take part since we couldn't see what you would get for the extra £700. It seemed that if you want isolation, then you should give it some consideration.
Back to the reception area stretching out on stilts about 100 yards from the shore and beside reception to the right lies the Italian restaurant and beyond that fanning out to sea are the sunset villas. Don't be shy, if you want to inspect the various villas on the island the staff will gladly show you around.
Situated on the beach is the water sports centre with an array of 'toys' to be enjoyed.
We loved the pedalos as each afternoon we would take one around the outside of the sunset villas staying close to the stilts and always watching for the coral. There is an element of skill and care needed as we have known some people to become marooned on the coral.
Below the surface the house reef, in our opinion is not the best we have seen, but there are plenty varieties of marine life. The water sports organised snorkel trip out to the right hand side sand bank as you look out from the centre is a must. The colours are unbelievable and at times the coral was glowing.
Away from the beach and towards the middle of the island there are the Lotus restaurant and the tennis court.
The Reef restaurant floor is covered in sand, so if you are like us two, we walked everywhere bare-footed. No need to dress up for dinner, a totally relaxed feeling throughout the island.
The major thing we will always remember about this island is...the food.
The food here is freshly prepared for you, breakfast, lunch and dinner and it has to be the best we have tasted during our 12 years together travelling around the world.
The desserts are to die for! Not too big, but just enough should you be tempted to go back for 2 or 3 of them.
The Teppenyaki is a great treat and the chef, well, let us just say that she is an expert with her tools.
The prawns are huge and come highly recommended.
Our opinion is the Italian & Thai are no better than the main restaurant, but it is an individual choice and there is a different atmosphere to that of the Reef restaurant.
My wife arranged an upgrade to a Deluxe Water villa for our last night and with it being a full moon the coral at No. 91 was exposed so much at low tide that it stood at least 1 foot above the water level. These villas are exquisite and the double jacuzzi bath looking out to sea is a lovely touch.
You might notice in the photos attached there is a lack of people, and no, I have not air-brushed them out. There were only 85 sets of footprints in the sand when we arrived on 24th Jan.
During our 7 nights we were also granted the pleasure of meeting some great characters. We have to mention...M&H (the spy), R&C (birthday girl),
A&R (honeymooners from Oz), S, L, N & O (the Halifax family), to name but a few.
Thank you to one and all, but our greatest thanks will have to go to the whole team at Centara Grand Island, you did yourselves proud.
We had a superb holiday...thank you.
