“Wonderful grounds”
Reviewed March 29, 2014

The house was shut after storm damage but the grounds are worth a visit alone. The place is surrounded by beautiful fields and woods, roamed by a multitude of livestock and provides a fantastic backdrop for a picnic or just space for the kids to run around.

“Excellent When Combined With Winchester”
Reviewed March 17, 2014

We took in Hinton Ampner as part of a day's outing, the rest of the time being spent in the city of Winchester, just a short drive away. As another reviewer has said, the house is closed due to the recent storms, but as it was a beautiful day, we just enjoyed strolling in the grounds and taking in the scenery. The house sits in a very commanding position and there are magnificent views in virtually every direction. You could do one of the more energetic walks and easily spend a couple of hours here. The church was a very attractive building, but we didn't go inside because of services in progress. We hadn't visited Winchester before, and the two destinations made for a very enjoyable late morning/afternoon. Would certainly return to this area, there are other NT properties within easy reach and our journey from the Watford area took about an hour and a half each way via the M25 and M3. Looking forward to more visits in future.

“House closed despite National trust indicating Open”
Reviewed March 16, 2014

Disappointed to find out on arrival that we could not visit the house due to recent storm damage. (The website did not mention this) Gardens were. Not particularly interesting. Luckily Uppark is only 30 minutes away so we moved on to there.

“Stunning”
Reviewed January 26, 2014

This is a house in a stunning location, the views are outstanding.
We visited on a pleasant January day, pretty muddy around the longer walks, but plenty of pleasant strolls around the garden.
The house has an interesting history, although only the entrance hall is open at this time of year. There was an informative display telling the story of the house and the devastating fire, and how it rose from the ashes.
The kids really liked the place too.
Cafe is nice, staff are really helpful and very friendly.
