Went for lunch with my parents and sister after we were too late to eat at Kylemore Abbey, which incidentally is well worth a visit. The waitress looked blank when asked if there was wine. I think she asked, ‘red or white?’ Anyway, my sister picked a fairly decent mini bottle that was a bit chilly but satisfactory.
The fish and chips were the best dish at the table but apparently tasteless. The cheese & bacon burgers had one slice of bacon shared between the two of them. A bit mean, considering the price of +10E. I had the roast of the day - lamb which the waitress assured me was nice. It really wasn't. It certainly had not come from a joint of meat. It was reheated lamb slices in a tablespoon of grey gravy served with deep fried, yet uncooked whole potatoes, masquerading as roast ones. This was accompanied by broccoli that had been shown some hot water but might as well have come straight from the garden it was so uncooked and carrots subjected to the same quick shower method.
It is a shame that such a beautiful grand hotel in a jaw dropping location cannot provide good food at a reasonable price. I felt like a tourist being taken for a fool. The only reason they are getting two stars and not one is that they had the decency to not charge us for the lamb and the meal was still nearly 60E. I ended up eating offerings and leftovers from everyone else’s plates as mine was truly inedible. Not cool. Personally, I thought the burger was okay. I would love to recommend this place but I cannot. I would not hazard a stay here for fear it might be the same chef that provided breakfast.
