“tired, shabby, below average”
Reviewed June 2, 2009

My parter and I almost left straight away. The room we had been given sloped so badly that your feet were above your head when you lay on the bed. When we told the staff asking for a different room they looked at us as though this was an unusual request. They hadn't even noticed how bad the slope was. Our bags rolled when you placed them at the top of the hill! Terrible!!! The whole hotel was tired and shabby - including the staff - and the whole vibe of the place was one of just giving up. The town itself was okay, the locals were friendly, but in terms of the county there are much nicer places to visit!

We stayed for three nights on a recent vaction. We would recommend upgrading to a superior room which is larger and has a great view of Sheephaven Bay. We really enjoyed the pub, Whiskey Fly Bar, and the restaurant. The staff and owners are very friendly and accomodating. We enjoyed visiting this part of Ireland because it is not as busy as other parts of the country but every bit as beautiful.

Thoroughly recommended for a relaxing and enjoyable time. Hotel staff exceptionally friendly and helpful. Food (both restaurant and bistro bar) top quality with excellent service. Rooms -most have wide sea views.
Yes-it's somewhat old-style but old-style that reflects quality and service.
We would have no hesitation in returning-even though it's on the otherside of the Atlantic!

My husband and I have just returned from a thoroughly enjoyable weekend in Arnold's Hotel Dunfanaghy. Admitedly they did give us a free upgrade to a superior room which was really lovely. We had a fantastic view across to Horn Head and since the weather was atrocious we did spend a lot of time just relaxing and enjoying the very comfortable room. Both evenings we ate in the restaurant which we could only award top marks to on each occasion , for both food and service. Breakfast was once again excellent- we couldn't ask for better. All in all a wonderful weekend and we will definitely return before the end of the season( Hope we get a free upgrade again!)

Arnold's Hotel, Dunfanaghy, Donegal, Ireland
Date: July 11th, 2008
Reviewer: Tim Wellock

Arnold's Hotel remains an oasis of perfect taste in the sea of misguided development which threatens to spoil Donegal. There was some work going on across the road during our stay, but god forbid that it will impede the magnificent view across the inlet of Sheephaven Bay. The hotel has been owned by the same family for three generations, and while growing to include 30 bedrooms it has retained all the attributes of cleanliness, friendliness and impeccable service that you would wish from a family-run hotel. As this is an area much populated by artists, there is no shortage of beautiful paintings adorning the walls - for sale, of course, but that doesn't detract from their appeal. The food is excellent - particularly the porridge at breakfast! We met people who had been going for 40 years, and while at their age they might have complained about having to climb a flight of stairs they seemed entirely happy.

  • Liked — Very clean and comfortable
  • Disliked — In order to have the sea view you have to overlook the road

I have stayed at this Hotel for 30+ years (I am 52) and never been disappointed. I wrote the first review on the property some time ago and looked again at the reviews since. I thought the standards must have dropped some people said it was dirty run down etc.
This visit I looked and measured the stay very carefully. I checked the bathroom behind closet etc - it was immacuately clean - yes the tiles and decor are a bit dated but still fresh and well maintained. Carpets are clean all the bed linen has been refurbished and is new etc. I forgot to take a picture of the bed room.
The food was as usual excellent- the dinning room was a bit hectic it was so busy - this was the last weekend it was open for the season and lots of holiday home visitors to the restaurant.
I spent hours in the reception reading again it is freshly decorated and bright - no sign of tired and dirty - dont know were this was coming from?
Situated on the roadside at a small village in a beautiful scenic area looking out over an inlet over Horne Head - the views are stunning.
The hotel is a family run hotel for families. It is not nor is it pretenting to be a 5* US Resort Hotel - you will get that at the Raddisson in Roe Valley or the Rossapenna in Donegal. If you want that standard go to these outlets - for what it is and for what it advertises to be Arnolds is excellent.

I am very sad to write how very tired this hotel is, from the reception area, the bar, the bedrooms to the staff who all look very tired or bored and either just don't have the interest in giving good customer service or can't be bothered. We had booked in for 2 nights but left after one. I can imagine the only reason people stay here is because the only hotel to compete has closed down and the same for the over rated restaurant, it is the only one in the village as the only other restaurant has closed too. Dunfanaghy has a very lovely beach, I would suggest a day trip and then moving on, Arnold's really does not deserve to be as busy as it is. It is over 2 weeks since we stayed there and it still grinds me that we wasted our time and money.
