West Coast Lodge
Reviewed June 17, 2010

This is an honest review - staying here ruined our family holiday

We stayed at the West Coast Lodge B&B in Lahinch a few years ago during a previous trip to Ireland, so i emailed them a few months ago to make reservations for myself, my husband, our 2 young children & my elderly parents.

I received a very friendly reply from the owner & made the booking for a 4 night stay via email.

Alarm bells started to ring the minute we pulled up outside the West Coast Lodge, since our previous stay the house had been extended by atleast twice, if not more, its original size. I later found out that if can sleep over 70 people, but only has off road parking for THREE vehicles.

Our family room was right next door to the common room, which is open until midnight, so on our first night we were kept awake by a group of young lads talking & watching TV. The TV had no volumn restriction so we could hear every single word of what they were watching.

As for our family room, the double bed was pushed next to the wall so i had to climb over my husband to get in and out of bed. Both wardrobe handles were missing as was one of the 4 knobs on the dressing table and we had no remote control for the TV.

Breakfast was a self-service continental, there so no one to help/meet you, only the owners dog kept us company and sat begging at the table.

Our 2nd night was a complete nightmare. A family, made up of 35 adults & children, had booked a 2 night stay and were using the room where you have breakfast and the common room to "party". The noise was dreadful, children RUNNING up and down the corridors screaming & totally out of control, we witnessed children jumping & bouncing all over the sofa's in the common room and we over heard members of this family complaining that there was no communial toilet so they decided to use the toilet in the room opposite ours.

None of the doors have "closures" fitted, so rather than close quietly they all SLAM shut. So you can imagine how many times we heard the door to the opposite room slam shut whilst the 35 people partying used the toilet.

Shortly after 9pm my husband & i went down to speak to the proprietor, as the noise was unbearable and our two young children were unable to sleep. We explained that the noise and behaviour was dreadful. We then found out that the party were staying for another night so we informed him that we would cut our stay short by 2 days and leave in the morning to find somewhere quieter.

The proprietor then became a little defensive and stated that on the booking form in states they are a HOSTEL not a B&B. I pointed out that i did not use a booking form as i made the booking by email, and that outside the house is a large sign saying "B&B for £20 per night" and that they also had a similar B&B sign on the main road into Lahinch.

He also said that the Irish party late into the night with their children so that was how the Irish celebrate!! (this is complete rubbish as i have a very large Irish family and they dont behave like that)

The noise continued until almost midnight and then started again from 1.30am - 3.30am. We even had people banging on our door at 3.20am looking for people from the party.

The following morning we had breakfast, surrounded by children from the party in their pyjamas, and packed our bags to leave. After paying the proprietor he offered to phone another local B&B, Craglea Lodge, to see if they had room for us. (please see my excellent review of the "Craglea Lodge" which was a lovely family B&B, CHEAPER than the West Coast Lodge & where you had a cooked Irish breakfast, not a continental)

This HOSTEL is ONLY suitable for young people. Oh and for people who like to hear lots of noise, doors banging and are happy to be kept awake all night & go without any sleep.

Firstly to respond to the guests complaint I would like to say that we are always dissaponited when guests do not enjoy the Lodge and we we have a great reputation with the "young at heart"!!
I do acknowledge that there was noise about the Lodge this particvular weekend and as the Lady has stated it was a family having a great time with their kids. this party was over 25 people who had a fantastic weekend using all our facilities for three birthday parties. Firstly the complaint came at 8.30pm and i would like to reiterate my point that Irish people on holidays to like to let their children stay up a little later and we do not impose rules on them as we like to see them have a good time. We locked up the lounges this evening at 11pm to facilate this family and there was silence from this point on. after this our night porter reported no distubance during the remainder of the eveing with the exception of one gentleman who knocked on the wrong door. With regard to my quote I made the point that "we are a hostel product and therefore there will be a party atmosphere early in the evening at weekends" but we do close these areas at 11.30 pm. With regard to breakfast we help, assist and clear all tables every morning and i offered to not have our dog around if they wished which was declined. Our reason for a continental breakfast is most of our clients enjoy the outdoors and when we did serve a full Irish breakfast it wasnot eaten. We have over a 90% rating on five different review sites and have never claimed to be anything more than what we are which is a boutique hostel. it is unfortunate that the product this family was looking was not here and we are dissapointed they did not enjoy their stay and that west coast lodge was not the product they were looking for.
