North West Golf Club

Owner description: Established in 1891, The Northwest Golf Club has often been dubbed by Cecil Barcroft, the 'St Andrews if of Ireland' as it draws its links comparisons with that of the famous Scottish links. A founder member of the Golfing Union of Ireland, the course lies between the picturesque Moldy Mountains and the Sea. The surrounding scenery is magnificent. The Club boasts a modern, comfortable Clubhouse with catering, bar and locker room facilities. It has been dubbed by Cecil Barcroft, the St. Andrews of Ireland. There is much in common between St. Andrews and ‘Lisfannon’, such as concealed runs and bumps approaching the Greens that look easy enough to run onto. Difficulties too, do not always catch the eye from the tee so it is very much a case of careful shot selection and keeping the driver firmly in the bag. The holes are very varied with many sandy knocks and pleasant undulations but the general tendency is flattish. It provides pleasant Winter Golf

North West GC is a great link's course tucked away in the seaside town of Buncrana. I'm sure most golfers would pass right by on there way to the handful of the more famous course's in the area, but that's they're mistake. This course is set right on the water and the prevailing wind will test you on every shot. You will use every club in your bag as you make your way around the tight fairway's trying to avoid an ample amount of devilish pot bunker's and pray for a 2-putt when your on the tricky undulated green's. I found this course quite challenging and fun at the same time. The members i played with were friendly and inviting as is the staff i encountered. The bar inside is upstair's and offer's a nice view overlooking the course and the Atlantic ocean...I had a nice guinness up there still thinking about how I double bogeyed the 16th!! For the value it's hard to beat.

This was the 2nd course our society played on the Inishowen peninsula for our now annual visit to Donegal. Being our last trip for the year, we always seek out good courses that offer value for money. North West definitely fitted the bill.

Built on a very narrow sandy strip adjacent to Lough Swilly, you need to be very accurate from tee to green to score well on this course. Rough is quite long and flat in places, which makes it very difficult to find wayward balls. That being said, the course was in great condition, scenery fantastic and the terrain relatively flat, leaving us with only the wind and difficult rough to worry about.

All in all an enjoyable course but watch out for occasional criss-crossing fairways and tees box signs advising golfers to give way to players on other tees (even though it’s not altogether clear to visitors just where the tees, to which the signs refer, are located).

We all enjoyed snacks and drinks in the well appointed, modern clubhouse after our round.

This is a long established course and I was a little surprised to learn that this club was a founder member of the Golfing Union of Ireland (GUI).

If your in Donegal make sure to play North West. At €25 it is excellent value. In really good condition - great greens, fairways fast and sandy showing typical links characteristics after dry spell. Though less dunes than many more famous local courses it still gives a true seaside golf test. Position of tee is key. No problems getting tee-time.

Great Greens and Fairways are narrow on this tought 18 hole golf course! If your thinking about bringing a groupbook in advance. Great club house with very reasonable food on offer! Green Fees Respectable. Sat and Sunday are busy so if your visiting book early to avoid dissapointment. this course will test every club in the bag!!!
