“Great Hotel”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed January 3, 2008

Hotel was beautiful extremely elegant.
Staff at check in were very welcoming and friendly
Room was great, we had a lovely view of the sea & i think Rathmullan across the bay. Bathroom spotless and large.
Pool was very nice, very well decorated and clean.
Had dinner in restaurant, food nice, service was good, staff friendly.
Breakfast was excellent next morning staff very attentive.
Would love to stay again.

We travelled to The Inishowen Gateway Hotel expecting a reasonable stay for our break which we booked at short notice. The hotel overlooks a narrow strip of golf course which flanks the beach and shore of Lough Swilly, a beautiful location. Our room on the first floor allowed an unrestricted view of the above. The room itself was large, well decorated, clean, comfortable and airy. Large windows enhanced the comfort. The hotel restaurants, table settings and decor were just right, in spacious surroundings. The food...the food was fantastic! Every night's menu was different with a good variety of choice, something for everyone. On top of this, each portion was huge (starters, main and sweet) with the excellent attendant staff offering more if we could squeeze it onto the already overflowing plates. The buffet breakfasts match the main meals.
The hotel has an excellent leisure centre - even though you have to walk a few yards outside to get to it - but the very large swimming pool, sauna, steam room and jaccuzi are spotless and welcoming after a day's exploring.
The staff couldn't have been more helpful, courteous and friendly.
In my years of travel, I haven't had as good a meal anywhere as I had at the Gateway. The well-mannered and professional staff ensured we will return when we are next on the Emerald Isle.

your comments:
Found this hotel extremely disappointing. The staff were extremely poorly trained, from the receptionist to the waiting staff (Found the housekeepers extremely lovely however, maybe they should be running the hotel?) There was very little sign of any management in the hotel, and the staff did not have to keep to any standards.
Also the dining room in the evening was set up exactly as it was in the morning (ok, the table was set differently), but the lighting was at the same setting and the buffet breakfast was out in full view. I felt changing the lighting, some candles, some flowers and maybe some background music in the dining room would have made it a pleasant place to dine, and would have taken 30 mins for the staff to do. Also it's very important in this hotel to make sure you get a seaview room, our first night was spent in a room overlooking the a very ugly carpark and a warehouse in the background, an extrememly depressing sight to wake up to, especially when just 15 metres away there's a beautiful view of the lough swilly. All in all i found this hotel very poor, mainly because of staff, but also because it didn't fulfill most of it's potential.

Not an expensive hotel and has to be judged accordingly. Even so, some small easily remedied issues could have made a great difference.. No point in having a central feature to your foyer if your staff let empty beer glasses stay on it for hours. Similarly with the tables in the foyer - we had coffee then went for a walk. Two hours later on returning the cups were still there. The staff appear completely untrained and are left to their own devices.
The rooms were spacious and reasonably modern - but you don't expect to find some one elses socks in your room!! The decor is terribly drab and whoever has designed this hotel has made no attempt to utilise the potential of a lovely view. Other than the bar there is nowhere you can sit and enjoy the view. Presumably the owners can't comprehend the possibility that some people might wish to spend some time elsewhere.
The Restaurant (for dinner) is not properly staffed and should be avoided. Breakfast is OK.
All in all very average

Stayed at Inishowen Gateway with my wife, son (3 yrs) and extended family. Booked a pamper break - 2 nights b&b 1 dinner and pamper session for approx. E179 per person. Great value, the rooms were spacious, staff friendly and helpful, breakfast good, food very good overall, scenery great, facilities great - pity about the weather. No
complaints. Would stay again, the package provided great value.

Very disappointed. Part of a large family/golfing group on our annual holiday. Hotel staff did their best, but under a lot of pressure as not enough staff to deal with everything. Rooms fine, views spectacular, food very very average. Frozen onion rings on an a la carte menu, no thanks! Bar staff rude and closed the residents bar at night when it suited them. Wheelchair bathroom in the lobby will manage a small childs wheelchair and that is it. Management did not seem to care. Childrens play are not open , yet advertised as so on the Hotel website. I won't be returning to this Hotel.

We stayed in the Inishowen Gateway hotel for 2 nights (including 1 dinner). We had a young child with us and found a total lack of facilities in the hotel. Most hotels will have a "family room" which will have a fridge, microwave, steriliser etc. This hotel had none of these (including a fridge in the room) - the only concession was a baby changing unit in the toilets with a large open bin for nappies - not a sealed sanitary unit. The breakfast was bog standard - the "fresh fruit" on the menu are actually just apples and oranges, the "selection of bread" was croissants with icing sugar sprinkled on them. I had tried to book a spa treatment before going but that section of their website was down, by the time we checked in I wasn't able to get an appointment. On the plus side I found that the cleaniness of the rooms and hotel were of a high standard but on the whole this is a decidedly mediocre hotel.

  • Liked — Nice views, especially in the hotel bar.
  • Disliked — Mean breakfast.
