Owner description: Birr Castle Gardens and Science Centre A Demesne of Discovery open daily from 9.00 until 18.00. The Award Winning Gardens of Birr Castle and the newly revamped Science Centre are rich in flowers, rare trees, extraordinary feats of science and engineering and wonderful wildlife. The Parsons family invite you to explore one of the most extraordinary places in Ireland. Created over generations it is an environmental and scientific time capsule. Treehouse Adventure Area This adventure area inside the Garden houses Ireland’s largest treehouse as well as picnic areas, a bouncy pillow, sand pits and dens. Great Telescope This, the largest telescope in the world for over 70 years, was constructed in the 1840s by the Third Earl of Rosse. With it he discovered the spiral nature of certain nebulae – leading to their identification as galaxies.

We knew in advance from reading the website that entrance to the 'Demesne' did not include the castle, so were not disappointed like some reviewers. I now see that you can book ahead for a tour of the castle and would probably do so if in the area again. We thoroughly enjoyed the gardens, and you can spend quite a long time in the wooded areas, along the stream, by the waterfall and particularly in the walled gardens - it would be a good place to picnic on a fine day. The science centre was interesting, the telescope worth going to see and, although we didn't enter it, the very large play area with tree house, etc., seemed to be full of happy kids. Gift shop, tea room and washrooms were all clean and well-laid out.

The incredible historic Castle and gardens, as well as the telescope provided hours of enjoyment. The museum was well presented and the gardens were very well maintained.

Birr Castle Demesne has been a favourite destination of mine for many years, with it's extensive gardens, parkland, telescope and scientific display, horticultural and botanical history and paintings and lovely coffee shop in the courtyard. This summer, however, for the first time (that I am aware of), Birr Castle was opened for viewing by the public! The hour long tour brought us through 5 of the main formal rooms of the castle - dining room, music room, entrance hall, library and sitting room. Our guide, Sam, was very knowledgable and enthusiastic in his presentation and very willing to answer our questions. This was a rare privilege and I am so delighted to have visited before the castle closed to the public again at the end of August. I do hope they decide to reopen it for tours next summer. In the meantime there is plenty to enjoy in the demesne, including a fabulous new children's play area complete with turreted castle climbing frame/slide/play gym, ground level bouncing surface (like a trampoline but safer) and large sand pits!

Birr Castle is well worth a visit of you are in the area, or even if you have to come from farther a field.

Kids will love the giant treehouse and trampoline. The museum and telescope will also interest both adults and children, and the gardens and grounds, while not spectacular (we visited in later summer), are pleasant to walk around.

The restaurant in the Courtyard is also of a good standard and reasonably priced.

We paid €25 or 2 adults and 2 children, which was very good value in my opinion.
