Owner description: Birr Castle Gardens and Science Centre A Demesne of Discovery open daily from 9.00 until 18.00. The Award Winning Gardens of Birr Castle and the newly revamped Science Centre are rich in flowers, rare trees, extraordinary feats of science and engineering and wonderful wildlife. The Parsons family invite you to explore one of the most extraordinary places in Ireland. Created over generations it is an environmental and scientific time capsule. Treehouse Adventure Area This adventure area inside the Garden houses Ireland’s largest treehouse as well as picnic areas, a bouncy pillow, sand pits and dens. Great Telescope This, the largest telescope in the world for over 70 years, was constructed in the 1840s by the Third Earl of Rosse. With it he discovered the spiral nature of certain nebulae – leading to their identification as galaxies.

Lots of different trees, not overly landscaped but enough to show the knowledge neccessary to create the gardens. The telescope from 1840's with small exhibition was very interesting......especially all the old black and white photos from that period.
Great wooden playground and castle for children up to about 12 years old.

We were there on a beautiful sunny day which made everything look spectacular.
We got there in the afternoon but could have easily spent a lot more time there. Enticing walks and things to keep the kids interested - little steps and paths and bridges. And... the amazing tree house - fabulous.
Can't wait to go back - for a full day and with a picnic.

Only thing I wasn't overly keen on where the entrance prices - it's a little expensive!

Gardens are the most beautiful in Ireland. Yet again this famous castle has a welcome for everyone. The present owners really did a good job in responding to the tourism need in the midlands. Well worth a visit and great value.

Stopped for lunch only but also visited the Science Centre. it is a free attraction in Birr castle although the castle visit has naturally an entrance fee. . Well worth a hour of your time. Lunch was good although surprisingly they had no soup or brown bread at 2pm? Friendly and efficient staff, nice setting. I will go back but maybe strengthen your coffee also. Some nice little boutiques in town and a pleasant place to stroll.

The new tree house at Birr Castle is a must for kids. We were expecting a walk around some nice gardens but the play area (with the coolest bouncy area ever) is right beside the main entrance and we managed to fill 4 hours with two very happy and very tired children. The tree house is just gorgeous, the stuff that magic is made of. They were building a little tuck shop at the play area while we were there and it is exactly what is needed as there is ample seating for tired parents and a coffee would have just made it perfect. The grounds themselves are well worth a walk around and the kids had almost as much fun rolling down a grass hill as they had at the playground. The visit was topped off with a lovely chat with some of the staff who gave loads of info about the house and gardens. The house is now open for visits so we will definitely be back. The town of Birr is also well worth a visit, loads of parking and lovely shops and cafes.
