Owner description: Birr Castle Gardens and Science Centre A Demesne of Discovery open daily from 9.00 until 18.00. The Award Winning Gardens of Birr Castle and the newly revamped Science Centre are rich in flowers, rare trees, extraordinary feats of science and engineering and wonderful wildlife. The Parsons family invite you to explore one of the most extraordinary places in Ireland. Created over generations it is an environmental and scientific time capsule. Treehouse Adventure Area This adventure area inside the Garden houses Ireland’s largest treehouse as well as picnic areas, a bouncy pillow, sand pits and dens. Great Telescope This, the largest telescope in the world for over 70 years, was constructed in the 1840s by the Third Earl of Rosse. With it he discovered the spiral nature of certain nebulae – leading to their identification as galaxies.

The museum was poorly maintained and would only be of interest to those that really like science history. The telescope on the grounds was restored between 1996 and 1998 (at a cost of around 1 million Pounds) but it was not clear was exactly was restored as there is very little information around the telescope.

However, the gardens (when we were there) were an absolute pleasure to walk around. They are however massive and would require a good 2 to 3 hours to do them justice.

Parking directly outside works on a "pay and display" system with a maximum of 2 hours per ticket.

The coffee shop at the entrance serves light meals made from fresh ingredients and was good value for money.

The entrance fee of EUR 9 to the gardens (museum included) was definitely not good value for money.

Thought we would wander around the 'Award Winning' gardens as advertised only to find acres of LONG grass and masses of weeds. Very unimpressed. No flowers and unkempt pathways and when I enquired if the owners of the Castle owned the gardens as well.....yes they do so whose pocket are we lining??? Waste of time.

As others have mentioned the Castle is a private residence and admission does not give you access to interior. The grounds are lovely with a large pond/lake etc. Worth a visit and a good excuse to get out for a long walk. Local town has some great pubs that offer decent fair and great drink.

Stopped by Birr Castle just to walk around on a family vacation. It cost 9 Euro just to get in. You are unable to even get close to the actual castle. If you want to take a picture from afar you certainly can. The telescope is cool but not worth the money. The gardens are sparse, at least this year early in the season.

I would like to start off by saying a little fake advertising - no one ever tell you that the castle is PRIVATE and you cannot see or explore it from close distance. Even when you purchase your tickets from their gift shop - they provide you with map on the grounds and you can see that there is PRIVATE castle inside. The scientific centre is very good and organized and provides with a lot of information about the Astronomy. The gardens and the grounds are amazing.
You can see the Guinness Book world tallest hedges... As a recap I would recommend this gardens and park area but not the castle. Also at the north west part of the grounds supposed to have some type of fountain in the middle of the river ( natural fountain) - no where to be found :) I can see a lot of people were searching everywhere in this area because the ground is so packed and trimmed. I believe this is some of the Irish jokes :)

Few more things - in the middle of the grounds is very old still working telescope..kind of interesting. Parking is very hard to find around the castle - there are only 4-5 spots on the north east side of the castle.
