Owner description: Birr Castle Gardens and Science Centre A Demesne of Discovery open daily from 9.00 until 18.00. The Award Winning Gardens of Birr Castle and the newly revamped Science Centre are rich in flowers, rare trees, extraordinary feats of science and engineering and wonderful wildlife. The Parsons family invite you to explore one of the most extraordinary places in Ireland. Created over generations it is an environmental and scientific time capsule. Treehouse Adventure Area This adventure area inside the Garden houses Ireland’s largest treehouse as well as picnic areas, a bouncy pillow, sand pits and dens. Great Telescope This, the largest telescope in the world for over 70 years, was constructed in the 1840s by the Third Earl of Rosse. With it he discovered the spiral nature of certain nebulae – leading to their identification as galaxies.

Ignore the castle in the name. You wont be going there as the aristocracy still hold residence. Its very pretty and I can only imagine that it would be very cool to have a look inside. That said the gardens are very nice with plenty of trails to walk the grounds and on a sunny day it is a wonderful place to walk and enjoy the flowers and the trees. A little museum shows off some artifacts from the past and a previous Earl of the castle built what at one time was the largest telescope in the world. It can still be seen on your walk through the gardens.

Went on a day when sun was shining If interested in telescopes there is a very large one in the grounds which has been restored. The gardens were pretty with lots of flowers and the meadows were full of wild flowers. The cafe had very friendly staff and delicious cream teas.

We went here with impression we would be touring an historic castle. Not allowed into castle as "the owners live there". Felt very cheated. All we had was a very expensive walk around a garden.
If you love telescopes there is an exibit here.
No parking.

One of most beautiful example of gardens that I've ever seen. Grounds are consisted of formal gardens (best time for visiting on my opinion - May, when lilac is in full flowers) and woods along the river and lake with a good places for picnics. Gigantic telescope is located in the middle of grounds, and all details about scientific studies of castle' owners put together in museum at the entrance to the grounds.

This was a great castle. No two castles we saw was the same. All castles are at least to a view of the catle and the grounds.
