The company and service could not have been better! We were treated to traditional Irish music and craic, surrounded by locals who became fast friends. This historic place has tons of charm (and wifi) and makes for a great evening/night out.

Dropped in for a quick lunch at 3pm. 2 adults and 2 children. Went upstairs to the loft restaurant. Had to clear and clean a table for ourselves. Room was not too busy. Had to ask the waitress after 15 mins if we could order. Kids could only get plain ham sandwiches. No lettuce, corn etc. we ordered soup and chowder. Adult food came after 25 mins. Kids did come for another 10 minutes. We asked what the delay was and were told that the kitchen had a lot of sandwich orders to get through. Both the soup and chowder were mediocre at best. They were not freshly made and really gelatinous. Kids sandwiches were dire. The drinks never came at all. Asked for the bill but had to go up again 10 minutes later to ask again. I did complain and they sorry about that. I was charged €20:40. I'm no fine diner but this took the biscuit.

Amongst the wonderful things about Ireland and the UK are their pubs. In Australia, we can't come close to replicating their atmosphere, and Durty Nelly's is a great example of this. How could you hope to replicate the atmosphere of a pub built in the 1600's? Authentic construction with rough finished plaster, exposed rough timber, a warm cosy interior...it has the lot! We were only there for pre dinner drinks and nibbles (see Bunratty Castle Mediaeval Banquet review) so we only spent about an hour on a chilly winter's night in the pub. But it is just wonderful. It is utterly charming and inviting, with the slightly dim interior lighting adding to the experience. We could have stayed hours! Honestly, we would not have been overly surprised if Oliver Cromwell or Lord Blackadder had popped in for a pint!
If you are looking for a pub that gives you a ton of atmosphere, a warm cosy environment, and an authentic 17th century experience, I highly recommend Durty Nelly's. An extra special recommendation to fellow Australians visiting Ireland!

Ths restaurant sits across the road from Bunratty castle and I'd been in there for a lunch and several times for a cold brew in the afternoons. I chose to eat my last dnner there and was completely surprised by the high quality of the food. I had the surf and turf and found the local beef to be tender, juicey and flavorful. The prawns were huge and very well prepared. I'll definitely go back again.
