We stayed here in November as I had booked dinner as a surprise for my wife and wanted to stay over and be able to enjoy a nice bottle of wine. As someone who is familiar with the good and the not so good hotels around the country, the vast majority not warranting my time in writing a review on Trip Advisor, I was interested to experience this hotel on the outskirts of the county town. I drive past on a very regular basis as I live only twelve kilometres away. Indeed, I have sometimes chosen the hotel for regional management training events when I had the choice of hotels across six counties. But what would it be like for a personal visit?
And so we arrived to a very warm welcome at Reception. It was quiet, as it is in most hotels at present, but it was certainly not deserted. At check in I was taken by surprise at the very kind gesture by management to upgrade us. This was not just any upgrade but an upgrade to the Kingscourt Suite on the fourth floor. This is a very large room in modern style with sitting area and entrance hallway. The bathroom was large and offered a large shower and bath. There was an outdoor space, accessed directly from the bedroom. The only downside was that this area was fully enclosed with high wooden panel fencing so that there was no view but plenty of fresh air. It had been used clearly as a smoking area by the last guests and it had a rather forlorn table and chair. But in dark November this part of the suite's facilities was redundant.
This hotel is a product of the boom years, built to good standards, with large public seating areas and an excellent leisure centre and gym. There is also a large shop on site selling some nice gifts including crystal, Newbridge silverware, kitchenware and so on.Parking is good and disabled facilities are evident. This hotel offers some excellent value for money at present and would make for a good base to visit the lakelands of Cavan or further afield to Enniskillen and Monaghan.
The big attraction at Cavan Crystal Hotel however remains the dining experience. The chef is the same person who attracted accolades and good reviews in the very early days of the hotel. We had a very enjoyable dinner in a pleasant environment with very good service. The last time I had dinner here was several months before and it was equally good. However the addition of linen table cloths and different, more formal, waiting staff made a huge difference. This time it was possibly better than any other hotel dining room not just in Cavan and Monaghan but the entire North East. The atmosphere might have been enhanced if there was background relief of some light music but otherwise it was very good. The starters of goats cheese and fois gras were memorable. The steak less so! The wine list offered plenty of choice.
The bar was comfortable and the entertainment was welcome. Overall we enjoyed our brief stay and the hospitality was very good. Now marketed as part of the Maldron marketing group, this hotel is certainly at the top end of that group. Well done to an excellent staff from Reception to dining room. We will return with friends to the dining room over the Christmas period.
