“mixed feelings”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed January 2, 2014

We booked and stayed here for the second leg of our honeymoon in November. Although we enjoyed our time here I'm afraid I have mixed feelings on this one however.

positives - bar staff very friendly and kind to my daughter, food really lovely, beautiful location and grounds, clean and staff at leisure centre extremely nice and helpful. Their afternoon tea also was an amazing experience - they done the whole works with more than enough sandwiches, scones, desserts etc.

However we felt dissapointed on our particular trip because although we stated it was our honeymoon when booking and paid an additional €40 for an upgrade to the 'deluxe room' we did not feel that there was anything particularly special about our room - despite double checking on arrival that it was in fact a deluxe room - The bathroom was one of the smallest I have ever encountered, the bed was a double, and the view was restricted - we would not describe this as 'deluxe'. Nor did we receive an acknowledgement or gesture of any description to mark our special trip - having just come from a hotel where we received congratulations from every member of staff and special treats at dinner as well as a treat on arrival to our room this was a huge let down for us.

Other things to note - decor in places is a bit tired, lesuire centre in need of repairs and updating, although barmen and food lovely the service was slow and at times it was hard get the attention of a staff member.

We had our Minimoon here in August after having been here twice before and just loved it. We booked their special Love To Be Pampered package for our break and we were given a free upgrade to a Lake view room. Champagne, fresh fruit and cosy gown on arrival, afternoon tea, meal and cruise on the Lake. It was the perfect Minimoon to wind down for 2 nights alone before we headed away with our daughters.

10 minutes walk away from both the towns of Killaloe and Ballina, which are separated only by a bridge, two quaint Irish towns perfect for a pub crawl and stroll around. Lovely walks nearby. Boat tours available from the pier and many bars to choose from.

The hotel itself is clean and the rooms are of a very high standard. There is a leisure centre with a pool (and slide), bar with bar food, restaurant and beautiful views from the lovely gardens. Buffet breakfast with a choice of full Irish or continental and tea/coffee making facilities in the rooms.

We will definitely return with our daughters for a family visit in the near future.

Room Tip: Room 101 overlooks the garden, bridge, lake and views out towards Killaloe with an old abbey ruin, g...

Stayed here for a work party. The staff were very good, food was great and they were very aware of me dietary requirements - coeliac disease. They had a separate GF toaster and all! Will definitely be staying here again!

Having stayed here many times thirteen years ago, i had no hesitation in returning to this lovely hotel, and even though it was winter i was not disappointed. Staff are welcoming and the public areas have plenty of character. There is a nice log fire in the bar area. Breakfast is excellent, highly recommend the bacon. The rooms are ok. I had a room located on first floor above the restaurant and was able to pick up the wifi signal, which some other rooms cannot. Try to get a room with lake view.

We stayed here on my birthday for one night and having phoned around to get the best prices for hotels around Lough Derg, we ended up booking the Bridal Suit (!) on a B & B basis for 110 Euros. I have stayed in five star hotels before with rooms of similar quality that cost double or more. This was apparently the best room in the house but I will say the bed was terribly hard. Perhaps it was built to withstand a sucession of wedding nights? Do check out the website as I can't speak for other rooms. We had a gorgous view overlooking the river Shannon (not the 'lake' as it suggests) and the town of Killaloe on two sides. We didn't stay for dinner, instead we went down the road about 800 yards or so to Flannagans - very nice, I will review this too!. It was definitely a well serviced place but there is no lift to the first floor. The friendly receptionist offered help with the bags however. The full Irish breakfast was gargantuan and the choice in the buffet was great. Highly recommended place to stay.

Lovely little hotel in great location. Very pleasant staff. Room was large, clean and nicely furnished but over heated. Breakfast was superb - everything you could want and very well laid out and labeled. Very good bar food and reasonably priced. Overall a very nice 2 night stay.

Room Tip: book a lake view room

Myself and two of my friends stayed here last Saturday night after a party in Killaloe. All we needed was somewhere to stay for the night, therefore we didn't have big expectations, thankfully as we were sorely disappointed. When we checked into our room there was a very bad smell of drains but we decided not to make an issue of it. We had hoped to be able to sleep on in the morning as it was around 5.00am getting to bed! We were awoken at 8.00am by an incredibly noisy dining room which we discovered was right next door. People were literally seated against the other side of the wall from from our beds. It was impossible for us to sleep. The room itself was very spacious as it was for 4 people, with quite a tired smelly bathroom. It was on the ground floor so when we opened the curtains people were passing by right outside our window where there was a path, absolutely no privacy. In my opinion this should not be used as a room as the location is so bad. We made our grievances known to the receptionist upon checkout. She gave us a halfhearted apology and was mainly defensive. I'm sure we would have had a totally different experience if we'd just had a different room. I would never stay here again.

Room Tip: Definitely don't stay in Room 300
