“Dream Steam engines!”
Reviewed June 30, 2013

Take a short drive into the country and visit this Gem, the owner spent a lot of time assembling this collection of steam powered engines that work. They are housed in the most beautiful old church that was physically moved stone by stone to Straffan. Next to this remarkable museum is a walled garden enclosing a beautiful garden. The tea room serves good tea and cake on Sundays.

“Steam Gem!”
Reviewed February 8, 2013

The owner of the Steam Museum is passionate about machines and has collected an amazing array of working steam powered machines. These are housed in an old church, moved stone by stone, from Inchicore! This is next to a charming walled garden. It is vital to see the machines in action, they are all in immaculate working condition and splendidly hiss. A charming new addition outside is a gypsy caravan and there is an old fashioned cafe in a barn.

“One of the best little tourist destinations in Ireland.”
Reviewed January 16, 2013 via mobile

I moved to Ireland 5 years ago and have systematically 'done the sights' and the Straffan Steam Museum is in my top three attractions. It's a small, slightly homespun affair but with a lot to offer for a family day out. There is a room full of model steam engines. Another room with dynamic models that demonstrate the physics of propulsion (more fun than I've made it sound!), in the yard there's a working horse drawn well where you get to be the horse to make it work. But best of all, the piece de resistance, is the STEAM ROOM! If you're at all interested in the engineering aspects make sure you visit on a steam up day, because you'll get to see full size, genuine steam powered machinery working! IT'S AWESOME! :)
if you're less interested in those aspects, there's still a nice welcome. There's a lovely old fashioned barn cafe and a nice shop with eclectic and interesting things to buy. Not to mention the stunning formal gardens which are worth a visit in their own right.
I love the Steam Museum and highly recommend it.
While you're in the area, try to also visit the Butterfly Museum and the Victorian Tea Rooms in Straffan Antiques near Barberstown Castle.
