“EXCELLENT VALUE FOR THE MONEY”
Reviewed November 19, 2011

Just back from a 3 night stay at the clanree and have to say that overall the hotel was very good, Booked through booking.com and got a very good deal on the price.

The hotel is large and clean with a beautiful entrance and hall, a lovely grand staircase for having your photos taken and plenty of space for parking outside.

The reception staff were very nice, booked us in quickly and with no problems.

We stayed in room 224 on the second floor and the room was clean and pleasant, as with all hotels there was a shortage of hangers but since we were only on a short break and our luggage was mostly jean and T-shirts this wasnt a major concern for us.

the hotel is surounded by a large carpark and on our first night a car alarm was blaring not far from our window, but staff quickly dealt with it and it stopped fairly quickly so full marks there

We only ate breakfast in the hotel and the dining room was nice, clean and roomy, the staff on duty chatted away and were very helpful. Breakfast itself was ample, and for the price we paid was of a very good quality. there were cereals, juices, wheaten bread, crusty rolls, porridge.with whiskey or cream and staff on hand to serve you a full english if you fancied it.

Housekeeping changed the towels and bed linen daily and always said good morning and passed the time of day when you passed by.

taxis could be called free from reception and we never waited more than 5 minutes for one to arrive.

Can comment on how the staff handled complaints because we honestly had nothing to complain about. when asked for advice on places to eat late at night we were directed to a local chinese.. which was the only place still serving.. (our fault for not eating a bit earlier) and told about a wonderful local place The Green Pepper which we visited the next evening.

Overall our stay at the Clanree was excellent and I would certainly recommend it to any friend visiting Letterkenny

Just back after 4 nights at the Clanree. We were on a coach trip and a bit apprehensive after reading some reviews.
We needn't have worried. I didn't find any faults.
The staff were very efficient and so friendly.
The room was absolutely fine - not that long since it was refurbished I think.
Although it was a bit noisy at the front we had to accept that it is a main road and it didn't bother us too much.
Entertainment - ok one night and good the other two nights (same singer). Nothing on the Thursday night but we just sat and blethered.
The food - that was the best bit. Excellent choice of main course and well cooked. I even had something I've never had before for breakfast. Porrage with honey and then you pour over as much whisky as you like. Amazing - try it.
Overall - I've given this an excellent rating and that is down to all the staff and the food.

Room Tip: Front rooms have a view but a bit noisy so it is a bit of a trade off. Doesn't matter if you ge...

I had booked the Groupon deal for 2 nights and my experience was somewhat of a mixed bag. Overall I enjoyed the break but I would have been somewhat disappointed if it had not been a deal through groupon.
So I'll start at the beginning (due to it being "a very good place to start!!"). I contacted the hotel via email about a month before booking to check availability and received a prompt response. I went back to book and had to then email again as I didn't receive a confirmation -but in the grand scheme of things my booking was made. I then had a look on the website to check the spa and decided to book, as advised, by emailing reception however I received a response advising that I would have to contact the spa directly. So I decided to leave it until I arrived.
The hotel was easy to find and had good parking available whilst it is on a busy road this was not too bad.
On check the staff were prompt and friendly I decided to book breakfast for ten euro each per day and received 4 plastic vouchers. We were allocated room 228 which was the very last room on the 2nd floor. The room itself was tired and a little shabby and could do with updating but it was large and clean. the bathroom was large with bath and in bath shower but also tired and grubby. There were very few 'luxuries' just some large dove/lux bolted to the wall and a small soap.
After getting unpacked we decided to head to the spa and pool. Their is no real on site spa -someone has the franchise for this and only works when she has bookings (which is fair enough) but this defeats the point of a hotel spa were you can pop in and treat yourself furthermore neither the leisure centre staff nor reception knew when the beautician would be working. The pool area was nice enough and water pleasant. You have to buy a head cap for three euro in order to swim and will need a two euro deposit for the locker.
On the first morning an alarm could be heard from around 6am for about 10mins this seemed to be coming from another room and went on forever!! We headed down for breakfast and I was very disappointed with choice and layout. The room was large and clean however choice was basic not very appetising. The cereal of which there were about 4 options where in large serving bowls rather than covered in containers or individually packed. The fruit was the same and there was also a large bowl of yoghurt. Given that by 9am everything had been picked over and was very spartan I decided to pass on these. There was ample bread and wheaten and also some small half croissants but no real continental choice. The hot food was served from a carvery style set-up by a member of staff -none of it was particularly hot. To be honest if I hadn't already booked breakfast for the best day I would have headed out and got a lot more for my ten euro.
The hotel is in a great location and we took advantage of being able to drive around and explore County Donegal. Ballybofey is a short drive away and has some nice shops and bars or Donegal etc is further afield.
On the second night we were awoke at 01.57am by the earlier mentioned alarm this time going off continuously for about 15mins.
Breakfast was no better on the second day but we weren't expecting it to be. The man serving the breakfast was pleasant and chatty.
As others have mentioned the wifi is limited to the lobby area and cannot be accessed in the rooms. although the wifi being free was nice.
Overall the hotel has its plus points the location, carpark and entrance hall were all real benefits however the grandeur ends in reception and the rooms are tired and dated, breakfast was disappointing and the hotel lacks a lot of the nice to haves. In saying that the staff were friendly and we did enjoy our trip. Whether I would pay full money to stay again...I somewhat doubt.

Great Value for money. Impressive reception area (look for the wedding photo of Daniel O'Donnell who held his wedding here)with marble pillars and sweeping staircase. We had a huge bedroom with a double and single bed. Very clean and fresh.
The food was fresh, hot and plentiful. The only drawback is that the hotel is on a VERY busy road into Letterkenny and traffic noise in front facing rooms continues throughout the night.

Room Tip: NOT at front of hotel if you are a poor sleeper-too much road noise.

Stayed here over a weekend. Receptionist was lovely at check in, great to get a bit of conversation from someone at a reception desk. we arrived into our room and it was a bit smokey. I rang down to her from the room and within a few minutes she sent someone from housekeeping up to us with new keys for a new room (excellent service).....The hotel seemed very busy and had a good buzz which is great to see in this economic climate. There was noise from guests which did continue a bit through the night but as we found out from the girl at the desk the hotel was full with 2 large functions on so we kinda took it in our stride...suppose it is a hotel on a Saturday night. Great atmosphere in the main bar with the entertainment ( a band playing with dancing). We had dined in the restaurant earlier and this was delicious and the staff were excellent, very courteous and happy and chatty (rather than stuck up and ignorant like a lot of hotel staff you get).
We loved our stay and on check out we asked about mid week deals also and rebooked for the beginning of December for a friends christening.Looking forward to it!!
The only thing I can say is that a few people seemed to have problems with their hot water (we didnt seem to) and on check out I could not believe the abuse the girls on the front desk were subject to. One man was swearing and cursing and being nothing but an abusive bully. It obviously was not the girls fault and the problem was not something the hotel did on purpose....I have never seen anything so disgusting!!there is never any need, no matter how bad your stay to speak to staff like this.
Looking forward to our next stay.....

Room Tip: ask for a room to the back to avoid traffic noise

Very disappointed with overall stay at the Clanree hotel! Where do I start? The Bedroom absolutely stank of stale smoke, there was no hot water in the shower and the hotel staff where not at all friendly or helpful! Waste of money.
