“Family Trip of a Lifetime Made Complete”
Reviewed July 2, 2012

My husband and I went to Ireland for our honeymoon in 1997. While there we came across the village of Ballyvaughan. We knew that when we returned to Ireland we would spend more time there. We recently traveled back to Ireland with our daughters ages 10 and 13. My husband researched accomodations in the area and came across Oceanville and more specifically. . Aunt Katie's Cottage. It sounded like exactly what we were looking for and did not disappoint at all. From the moment we arrived we were in love with the quaint cottage and the breathtaking view of Galway Bay. Kathleen and Sean went out of their way to make sure our stay was wonderful. Even though we were in the self catering cottage, we were able to order breakfast at the main house whenever we liked. It was delicious and made to order. Kathleen is a wonderful hostess. Although we were out most of the time exploring the area (and visited some places we hadn't thought of thanks to Kathleen) our time spent in the cottage was part of the laid back West Ireland vacation we were looking for. Our girls loved sharing the loft with their personal view of the Bay. We would definitely return and absolutly recommend the cottage to other families.

This was a last minute stay as I had had car trouble. Very hospitable and understanding management and treated to great Irish hospitality.

My partner and I stayed here for a night last week. We hadn't prebooked as we decided to stay in Ballyvaughan on the spur of the moment. This is probably the cleanest and most hygienic accomodation we have stayed in - Kathleen really is spotless!
The breakfast was delicious and the orange juice was plentiful (thank you Kathleen, much appreciated after a few too many drinks the night before). The bedroom was nicely furnished in a charming, old fashioned way and the bed was extremely comfortable.
Just one or two little niggles - there was no soap or showergel in the bathroom. Not a huge problem, but these facilities definitely make a stay more comfortable. Also, on entering the B&B there are quite a few saints and holy pictures on the wall. Although I found it charming and comfortable and it brought back memories of my childhood home, I did wonder if visiting guests from different backgrounds might not find it ideal?
When checking out, we looked for an ATM machine, and were told that the nearest one was a 15 - 20 minute drive away. This was unfortunate (and embarassing) as we were slightly short on cash to pay for our accomodation. Thankfully Kathleen was kind enough to tell us not to bother driving so far and let us pay what we had. (Sterling and lots of coins!) We really appreciated her kindness and hospitality.

Room Tip: Advice - If staying in Ballyvaughan, be sure to withdraw any cash you need before you get there! The...

Stayed here after being let down by our hotel. We were in Ballyvaughan so my husband could participate in the Burren Marathon Challenge. The b&b is very well located as it is just at the start finish line. However there were no allowances made for him to be able to use shower facilities after finishing his run, we had to vacate by 10.30am, no exceptions made, despite him not finishing his half marathon until after 11, he was denied use of the facilities. Left a very bad taste in our mouths. I am 7.5 months pregnant and was told I could wait in the b&b until he was finished his race, unfortunately I didn't see the point in doing that if he couldn't freshen up, I preferred to leave ASAP. Would not return, was very upset at this bizarre treatment. Views were lovely as was location, just a shame about the lack of hospitality.

Kathleen M, Owner at Oceanville House Bed & Breakfast, responded to this review, June 12, 2012
In Oceanville B&B we have over 20 years experience and do our utmost to provide a hospitable and friendly service.

Firstly, regarding shower facilities: The main bathroom downstairs with shower facilities was available for guests checking out on that day and who were competing in the marathon (half or full). They returned to shower and freshen up having left their cars parked with us. The same facility was available to your husband plus tea & coffee in the front lounge, if so desired.

Secondly, due to you being pregnant, I informed your husband that you could rest until 12.30 pm - not 10.30 am as stated by you and that we would leave your room last for cleaning. The option of allowing you to occupy the room after 12:30 was not possible as you must appreciate it was reserved that day for another couple participating in the marathon.

Obviously, one's best efforts will never please everybody. I defend my good reputation and would always assist and advise guests in whatever way possible and would never prevent any guest from using our facilities.

My son and I stayed at Oceanville House last month and enjoyed it very much. The room was nicely appointed, the living room and breakfast room were just right and what I liked more than anything was the sun room that is in front of the home. I has a great view of the bay and greater Galway Bay. I was able to have a cup of coffee, write a few letters and wait for my son to wake up for breakfast.

If you are looking for a nice pub dinner, go to Monk's which is just next door. Great Fish and Chips and their chowder is wonderful.

The Oceanville is RIGHT next door to Monk's Pub, providing staggering distance to a local quite nicely. There is plenty of parking in the lot next to the large house. The landscaping is lovely, the view is incredible, out over the waters of Galway Bay. Our room was upstairs, a nice sized room with a nice-sized bathroom, impeccably clean, and a lovely little table and chairs in an alcove overlooking the bay. There were enough plugs and surfaces for all our electronics and stuff.

The place was large enough and modern enough, it looked purpose built, with at least 8 rooms for use. The steps are a bit difficult to negotiate with large luggage, but I've seen much worse. There are downstairs rooms, it looks like, for those with mobility issues.

The breakfast was great in a nice, large, sunny room, and the hostess, though she seemed a bit distracted, was friendly and very helpful. She arranged to have our laundry picked up and dropped off when we discovered the laundrette owner was out of town taking an exam in Galway, and it was our only day in town. Free WiFi was available, and worked fine.

We stayed in this wonderful Bed & Breakfast "Oceanville" located right on Galway Bay in the enchanting village of Ballyvaughan, Co Clare. Kathleen was an exceptional hostess as she made us an exquisite breakfast and she was so full of good humour, willing to spend time chatting with us like we were old friends. Her rooms are all spotless and excellent value.

If you want to experience Irish hospitality at it's best and also get the bonus gift of being right on the waterfront, next door to Monks Restaurant, which is a great place for food, music and a glimpse of the local scene, book into Oceanville B&B. Also we discovered the Ballyvaughan Tea Rooms along the waterfront are open again with a lovely selection of home baked goodies.
