arrived at gregans in the afternoon for lunch and was immediately impressed with the welcoming we got fro the hotel owner. we wrer made feel very welcome and our bags were sent to our room. we had dinner that evening and the whole eating experience was sacond to none, food was beautifully cooked and presented, not hard to see why it has won so many awards. we
really enjoyed our stay and we will definitely be back.

Beautiful gem of a hotel located in the spectacular Burren. Peace and quiet in abundance and fantastic service and food quality. Prices are high for the region but service comparable to fine establishments in the UK or further afield. It has the personal touch but not in a twee way, rather being highly professional, attentive but unobtrusive. We loved the room and the bed and the tour that was arranged for us was rough and ready but 100% authentic. Be warned that you shouldn't assume tour transfers or kit - come prepared. Overall, highly recommended

My husband and I had been looking forward to staying in Gregans castle and had very high expectations. Overall we were disappointed in the value. First of all we had booked a superior room and were put in a family room. As this wasn't quite the romantic room we had expected we asked to be moved. In fairness the staff did all they could to accommodate us and put us in the rose room. They explained this was also a superior room but at half the size we had our suspicions we were really in the last room they had left. The facilities in the room were very average and it was akin to staying in a B and B rather than a five star guesthouse. The food was the real star with the breakfast and dinner both excellent experiences with a fantastic quality of food being served. Our real issue though was being massively overcharged for drinks at dinner. As it was in season we asked if there happened to be any elderflower cordial to drink instead of the usual soft drinks. We were delighted to be told there was and enjoyed a number of glasses over dinner. When we checked out and were reviewing the bill at home we discovered we had been charged €6 per glass of elderflower cordial with sparkling water leaving us with a bill of €48 - essentially what you would spend on a couple of good bottles of wine for soft drinks. To put this into perspective one month earlier we had stayed in another well known five star establishment where we had been charged €2.50 for each elderflower cordial and sparkling water. Having spent hundreds and hundreds on two nights stay we felt this was really quite ridiculous. Would we stay again? No. Would we encourage others to go? Yes if you know what to expect and avoid ordering anything that there isn't a price beside on the menu.

The location for Gregans Castle Hotel is spectacular bordered as it is by the rising limestone of the Burren on one side and flanked by a stony green valley below. The building itself is less castle and more breeze block in structure. We found the staff attentive and friendly. We were unfortunate enough to stay on a night when dinner consisted of a themed set course comprising 12 or more servings. There was no alternative menu for guests who might not want such fare. For the €80,00 price, the themed multi-course dinner was not good value. Added to this, a waiter pouring water in to our wine glasses, and the meal took on a somewhat Keystone cops air. The rooms are nicely furnished and the breakfast was good. Would I stay there again? The answer is no. Gregans' portrays itself as a warm and friendly haven, but I did not, as I have felt in better hotels, feel any great warmth from staff. I have stayed in better places for half the price. Incidentially, the water in the wine calamity resulted in the waiter simply removing the glasses and re-filling new glass from the original bottle. I did complain, and this elicited an email from the hotel manager a few days after our stay offering a free glass of wine next time we were in the area. That pretty much encapsulated a disappointing stay experience at this quite average so-called castle hotel.

Room Tip: Rooms facing the east look out across the Burren hills.

If you are visiting Ireland’s beautiful West Country, do not miss Gregans Castle Hotel—unless you are averse to peace and quiet, well-appointed, comfortable rooms, excellent food, and attentive but unobtrusive service. My husband and I stayed at Gregans for the fifth time in early June and were welcomed by the staff and the owners as if we were old friends. (At one point, the owner went so far as to have a staff member change a damaged tire on our rental car and then called around to find a garage with the appropriate replacement tire in stock; he also brought a standing reading light for my husband’s use from his own home.) Gregans, which retains the feel of a well-appointed family home, lacks the “amenities” of many country house hotels: There is no swimming pool, tennis court, or spa. There are no televisions or minibars in the rooms. Cell phone use in the public areas is discouraged. It is a place to curl up next to the fire with a book, a place to escape from the endless electronic alerts of incoming e-mail and text messages. The hotel boasts an elegant dining room (with a lovely view past gardens and fields across Galway Bay) and employs a gifted chef, although potential guests should be aware that there is a set menu with limited options on most nights. (Two nights a week, a more casual menu is offered in the bar.) If you stay for more than a night or two and desire a less formal evening meal, there are some very good places within fairly easy reach of the hotel, including the Wild Honey Inn in Lisdoonvarna and Morans Oyster Cottage in Kilcolgan on the way to Galway; Cathleen Connole’s Burren Fine Wine & Food, just down the hill, is a good place for lunch, with excellent soups, salad plates, quiches, and baked goods made from local ingredients. A week of walking in the Burren in the daytime and sleeping in the deep quiet of Gregans at night will clear your head and feed your soul. It is simply good for what ails you.

Stayed for 2 nights in July in a tastefully decorated, comfortable, specious room. Great location to all west clare attractions. The grounds of the hotel are gorgeous with spectacular views. The staff is terrific and very helpful in booking excursions / recommendations. As mentioned by other reviewers, the food in exceptional. I actually found the main dining room to be a little too "foodie" for my simpler tastes, but thought the bar menu was perfection. Additionally, it was a great value for the price. Can't wait to return!

During a recent vacation in Clare, my wife and I reserved a table at Gregan's Castle Hotel restaurant. They offer a fixed menu till 20.00 then a taster menu from that hour on. We chose an early seating and a 'prix fixe' option. The menu is graduated to the number of courses per diner which is very fair at this price range.
Bring an appetite and spirit of adventure. This is nouvelle cuisine at its most delicate. The dining area is very welcoming and comfortable with a nice hum of conversation. We were treated to 6 courses over a leisurely 2.5 hours or so. The service was commensurate with the highest quality local and often organic fare on offer. As the restaurant offers refined food, it is a place for an occasion and not for sequential nights of dining, I would suggest.
Smoked wood pigeon, rabbit, lobster, cod featured on our evening and all portions were perfect, balanced in flavour and textures and accompanied by a lovely wine list. I don't know why foodies don't comment more about Gregan's Castle - but its location in the most gorgeous county in Ireland and outstanding attention to detail make this a place to return to for a special dinner. Bravo to the chef!
