“Awful, do not stay here”
Reviewed October 16, 2012

I have just returned from a stay at The Hylands hotel and it was without doubt the worst experience I have ever had at a hotel.
The room was basic but clean enough which we didnt mind as we were only staying for one night. We dined with family at a nearby restaurant and when we returned around midnight our room was nice and warm. However during the night the heating was turned off and we woke up to a freezing cold room. What was worse was that there was was absolutely no hot water, not even the kind of cold you could take for a few minutes - it was baltic!
I rang down to reception and I was told the tank had been drained but should heat up soon so we decided to go down for breakfast first. Breakfast we were told finished at 10am and this was 9am. Buffet style?? No orange juice, scraps of brown bread and a cereal was all that was on offer so we ordered a hot breakfast. Service was extremely slow as there was only one person serving the entire room which was also freezing, we had to ask a few times for tea and a jug of milk. The final straw was when I ordered more toast and there was a large amount of mould on the bread.
When we returned to the room the water was still freezing so we left cold and unwashed. I did complain at reception and the girl was apologetic but said that alot of guests were obviously showering at the one time hence the lack of warm water! Not good enough, a shower is not a luxury but a necessity - every hotel in the world has hot water. Upon checkout I did not pay the €90 but paid €50 which it was all it was worth - the first time I have ever done this!
I will definitely not be returning which is a pity considering the beautiful location.

We have just returned from this hotel. Where do I start!

We checked in and the room was basic but clean. We then went for dinner which was nice too. After dinner went into the bar as there was a band playing later that evening. As we started to order drinks we found the barman would have preferred if didn't have to serve us. He had never heard of customer service. later one of the female staff started serving and she was lovely.

Next morning went for breakfast. Asked for two poached eggs but might as well have asked for two hard boiled eggs. service was slow but fine.

Went to have shower no hot water. found out no one else had hot water either. The receptionist said it would be 5 to 10mins but after half an hour still no hot water. So with no option but to check out unwashed and early. When booking I was informed I could have a late checkout but that was cancelled at breakfast time because the hotel was closing. To be given no deduction from the final bill I was a bit annoyed to say the least.

I only expected the basics as it was a cheap hotel but having hot water to have a shower I would assume was not a luxury but standard.

We stayed here for two nights, and thoroughly enjoyed our stay here. The room was spacious, plenty of room for our one year old to run around in, it was clean and tidy. The staff were very friendly and the food was excellent. The bar attached was a lovely place to spend an evening with the fish available on the menu, including the seafood chowder, very tasty.

Great location right in the centre of Ballvaughan, although nearly missed the car park on arrival!

Just got back from 4 nights at the Hylands Burren Hotel on business.

The staff were all very kind and the food was delicious. The rooms were cleaned every morning to a very good standard and the hotel location is very relaxed.

Try the seafood chowder, incredible.

stayed in ballyvaughan for a week in sept,we only stayed two nights in hylands, which were the last two days of our stay, i wished we stayed the week! the secret to this place is the staff, all absolutely superb, from carmel and jennifer who are so friendly and nothing is too much trouble to them if you need anything to patrick behind the bar who has always got time for a chat, to mick the chef who is a real character and a top of the range chef! i must add these staff work long hours, and it must be tiring for them but it never shows! excellent hotel, very comfortable a really enjoyable stay.

We were there with our two children who loved the family room.
There is a lovely relaxed chilled out vibe to this place. We had dinner, great value, and a lovely breakfast there.
They serve a brilliant pint of Guinness in the bar and make sure you try the seafood chowder.

Enjoyed our short stay in Ballyvaughan. We were here for a wedding and chose this hotel because of its central location. It is right in the village and walking distance from everywhere as it can be tough getting a taxi late at night and we didnt want to find ourselves walking on dark roads. Our room was to the front of the hotel almost over the front entrance which was a little noisy when guests were returning late at night. We ate lunch in the bar on arrival which was very filling and then enjoyed a good breakfast the next morning. The rooms were fine, clean but a little basic and the bathroom a little small. Did enjoy the wonderful smell of a real fire in the lobby - very welcoming.

Room Tip: Ask for a room to the rear of the hotel. Those on the front are a little noisy.
