"An Stad" from Irish translates to "The Stop", and as a name for a care/restaurant, it caught my eye. It's in the center of Rathmullen, on the Fanad Peninsula, and it's where I chose to have brekkie, after a short ferry ride over from Buncrana. Normally, I go with local knowledge, but this time, I thought I knew better, not so.
On entering, I was greeted by a very friendly lady, who happened to be the owner, and when I asked her what she recommended, she mentioned the "farmers breakfast", which she said was an omelette with spuds, so I immediately said "yes please".
While I was waiting, she asked if I would like a newspaper to read, and I took her up on the offer. Brekkie didn't take long in arriving, but my first impression was that it was half salad, half omelette, and not a combo that goes well together. I kinda imagined a farmer having a fine big breakfast, without any salad. And I also got a half a cup of coffee with it!!
However, the omelette was lovely, but I left most of the salad on the plate, and when I finished my half a cup of coffee, I asked for a "re-fill". I kinda got a funny look, like they don't do top-ups. However, I got one, but it was awful. Wretched. Normally I'd complain, but the lady was so nice, I hadn't the hearth. So, I read the paper and decided to leave.
"Thanks very much for the breakfast, how much do I owe you", I enquired. 11.50 Euro. I sure my jaw dropped. 11.50 Euro for a breakfast, which was half salad!!! I could have got 3.72 breakfasts in Weatherspoons for this price, and I have to admit, they are nicer, with no salad. I reluctantly paid and left, vowing never to return.
All in all, it's not a bad spot, and the lady is very friendly, and one could happily spend plenty of time here, chatting and reading the paper, but they have lost the plot when it comes to prices. My advice would be thus, lower the prices, lose the salad, and introduce a traditional fry-up, and watch the punters flock in.
A little later on, I went into the Beachcomber, and they were offering a curry for a tenner, which I would much rather have gotten.
