“A Hiden Jewel”
Reviewed August 4, 2013 via mobile

Rathmullan House is situated in its own estate grounds, thick with trees and shrubs. The hotel is like living at home, no modern gleaming chrome or hi tech door openers to worry about, instead you have large fireplaces, small quirky lounges to relax in and a beach at the bottom of the garden.
We have stayed here many times and we love it even more. The staff treat you so well and cannot do enough to make your stay very relaxing.
There is a walled garden at the rear of the house were they grow a lot of their own produce which is freshly picked and served in its restaurants.
The breakfasts are great, with all the usual trimmings. There is two restaurants at the hotel and both are well worth a visit.
The room we had was a superior room which had a seated area and a balcony overlooking the gardens and water.
Rathmullan town has little to offer but it's a nice place to walk around and grab a coffee.
Like Arnie says "I'll be back".

Wonderful stay in this great Irish country house hotel. Lovely location with gardens reaching down to the beach. Staff friendly and attentive, room attractively furnished, comfortable and quiet. Food in the main restaurant simply wonderful: fresh local ingredients, lots of sea food and expertly cooked in inventive ways. Many different sitting areas in the hotel both inside and out in the gardens means you can always find a quiet spot to read and relax. Highly recommended.

The country house experience is not for everyone. It can be boring to some because one is in the country after all. The building is vintage not sleek glass and smooth stone. There is no central reception area with perky young girls in uniforms to swipe your credit card and hand you a card to swipe to enter a room. Etc. but it is a genre of hotel we love and so we had a wonderful stay.

The house is giant and sprawling. It has a gigantic walled garden on one corner, probably a half acre of fruit, vegetable and flowers. You want to eat locally grown produce? You can't get more local than this. The sea is a 2- minute walk away. Locally caught seafood every night.

Fine, large room. Good sleeping bed and a large seating area to boot. Perfectly functional and not at all cramped bathroom. Flat panel TV and free wi-fi. A respectable indoor pool and a spa that we didn't try.

The restaurant was fine. The bar has a large collection of both Scotch and Irish (Northern and Republic of) whiskies.

Rathmullan is historic: read up on the Flight of the Earls that ended the 9 Years War. Note that the local museum and tour operate only on Thursday and weekends, not sure why.

It's about 20 mins N of Letterkenny, just under an hour from Derry, and an hour from SW Donegal. It's a great place to plop down and take driving trips from. We liked it best of all the non-B&B's on our driving tour and very much covet a chance to return soon.

We visited Rathmullan House recently and ate with friends at the Cedar's Bar and Eatery. The menu was not that exciting however we did appreciate that it was bar food. So we ended up ordering fish n chips, home made dexter burgers etc (which would certainly not be our normal choice when eating out) - all of which were just okay and nothing special. The service was also a bit sporadic and slow. After lunch, we sat outside Rathmullan House and had coffee and tasty scones which was lovely. The setting itself is also beautiful. Think we will eat at the Weeping Elm Restaurant next time.

We stayed here in May for one night returning to where my husband spent his childhood holidays. The hotel position is fantastic. The large sofas in the public rooms great as long as you get a comfy one. The bedrooms very large . This is the sort of hotel we usually stay in but feel this time it was overpriced. Our evening meal was good, but not great, breakfast lovely.

We stayed here lastnight in a family room which was lovely, although its location was far from ideal with a pram and no lift and plenty of stairs up and down and around etc, but that's the only fault really, although I do have to agree with an earlier review that ornaments in the room were dusty and 1 of the shutters on the window had no hook so wouldn't stay closed, and you would expect the attention to detail to be of a slightly higher standard when you are paying a high enough price for b&b. in saying that the service was very good and staff were very friendly, the food was amazing, excellent!!! After breakfast we went for a walk along the beach which was lovely, the hotel was very busy, plenty of people staying young and old and many families so a pretty good mix of people. Will definitely visit again but would maybe prefer to try a room in the newer end!

Thank you for your review. We are delighted you enjoyed your stay with us. The newer wing of the hotel would have less stairs with a number of rooms on the ground floor. We hope to see you back again soon. Michael

Firstly, the positives. Beautiful location and had room availability at short notice. The gardens were very well manicured with easy access to the beach. Service was fairly good.
This hotel is not a 160 euro a night hotel. I have travelled extensively through many countries and this I found to be one that is over priced. It could be argued that the somewhat tatty interior is supposed to maintain an old style charm, however, a lick of paint would not go astray in many areas. Quaint patio areas had no privacy, again it could be argued that this was to maintain a feeling of openness in the garden, however, if outdoor privacy is sought, this is a poor option. the room cleanliness was average - I don't expect to see dust on ornaments and pictures for 160 euros a night.
The restaurant - again, overpriced. When I complained that the sole was, pardon the pun, rubbery, the waiter told me he would inform the chef. I received no response. As far as I was concerned I had voiced my dissatisfaction and as I was on holidays, could not be bothered bickering over a piece of fish and average culinary criticism response.
A couple of bits of advice, if you do stay here, pop into town for a bite to eat, or if you have time, drive towards Donegal town and stay at Harvey's Point Hotel. We stayed there last year for a wedding and it is indeed world class.
This is perhaps a rather dissecting review, but it's honest and from someone well travelled and who expects to receive value for money. With some attention to detail, this establishment could
Be exactly what it touts itself to be.

Room Tip: We only stayed in the one room and did not have the opportunity to evaluate any others . Perhaps if...

Thank you for taking the time to review us.
We are sorry that you thought €80 per person bed and breakfast for the room was overpriced. Looking at our records we are thrilled to see you even stayed on an extra night.
With the weather being so gorgeous all our windows and French doors were open and with lack of rain for some considerable time it meant the housekeepers were battling with the dust even after they had serviced the room.
Our fish supply is incredibly important to us. We send our van to the Greencastle fish auction on a weekly basis so we get the freshest of fish.
Although we do have two restaurant menus we also have our casual bar food option available which is attractively priced.
One of the great advantages of staying at Rathmullan House is you can walk into the village via Batts walk and enjoy the facilities of the village.
Thank you once again and your comments have been noted into our Optimus guest feedback report.
