“Great Value Hotel”
Reviewed April 3, 2013

Stayed here recently just for one night.Got good deal and wasnt expecting much. Its an old hotel but that in itself adds character , but may not suit all tastes.Found the beds comfortable, breakfast very good.Didnt use the pool so cannot comment.
Would recommend for one night stay if on business in area.

Stayed for one night in February and had a very disappointing experience. Firstly, the safe would not work. We rang down to reception and we told someone would be with us in the next few minutes. The few minutes ticked away until we were almost 3/4 hour waiting. The reason we needed the safe in the first place was so as we could lock our belongings away while we went for a swim. A young girl called to the room, checked it and confirmed that it was broken and would send someone up with a replacement safe for us. Again, we waited while time was ticking away. We rang reception again and they said someone was on the way. We explained we wanted to go for a swim and were assured someone would be with us soon. After another wait our phone rang and we were told by the manager that the safe was too heavy and could not be replaced. He said we could put our belongings in the office safe. When we went down to reception the receptionist informed us that the pool would be closing in the next half hour. We were quite annoyed to say the least. The rooms are in need of serious updating. The radiator was leaking water all over the carpet, bedclothes look like they are older than me and bathroom
is very 70's style.
A disappointing stay to say the least.

Room Tip: Ask for a room with a safe that serves its purpose.

The hotel was located at the end of the street along one of two main drags in Bray. So the location was pretty good. The rooms were big which is the only thing it has going for it. The room was filthy. The walls were grimy, the fabric chairs seriously looked like they were taken directly out of a dumpster and placed in the room, tea kettle was filled with black grime, the bed was completely saggy down the middle, there were holes and stains on the bath towels, no toiletries or hairdryer (I had to ask for both, which they did provide me at the front desk), the hot water ran yellow out of the bathtub, wood paneling near the radiator was lifting up, there was a hole in the drywall, it took a long time to get hot water but then when it came there was no temperature control (the knob existed it just didn't work) and the water was scalding hot, there was mildew in the shower tiles, had a nice city view but a bus stop and main road under the room which was noisy. There are smokers that linger at the entrance so you have to walk through their stink coming and going. Hotels.com said breakfast was included but then it wasn't - luckily I had printed out my confirmation and the hotel did honor it. Breakfast was a full irish breakfast but it was cafeteria style and the food was not good. The bathroom door had a crazy makeshift doorknob and lock but the door didn't actually latch shut or lock. The only two lights on the hotel sign that lit up on the outside of the building were "RO" out of "ROYAL". This place was a total dump. I can stand outdated, small and even broken down but my main problem was how filthy the walls and furniture were. Skip this hotel, and in fact don't bother going to Bray at all.

The hotel was easy to find . We had to pay €5 for the car park per day , i thought that was good value and your car was safe . The hotel was old charm but really nice , the reception staff very very nice and extremely helpfull at all times and chatted away to my children, which was nice !!!.

The leisure centre was really clean and has a lovely jaczzui, a little haven away from the children lol. The food was nice too

The bedroom was a bit small but it didnt really matter as we were gone all day ,as there are so many things to do in Bray.

We had only planned on staying one night but we were having such a good time , we decided to see if there was a room available for the saturday night , the girls at reception did everything possible to get us another room and eventually we were booked in again to stay, we were given a room that was much bigger that the previous night , it had a DVD player and as it happened our friend had given us a DVD of the Prince of Caspian , which we were happy to watch after along and enjoyable day around bray

Room Tip: 205 , great room !!!

Spent 3 nights on a tour with this hotel. It is an older hotel done up to more mordern standards but it is a refurbished building. Its clear that some of the fittings such as the bathroom have been fitted in to the room, but this is what you expect in an older central hotel. The hairdryer smelt funny when used and a friend actually had none. Saying all this the lesiure center is fine with a reasonably sized pool and clean enough.

The food was very good, but what made this a nice hotel was the staff, who had no problem on helping out and providing information when asked. Towels in the bath were not changed, but a quick friendly call to reception and this was sorted out in minutes. Overall, a hotel with a tired feel but made up for by good food, entertainment at night, and friendly staff. Its in a very central location in Bray providing quick access to all parts of the general Dublin area while not city central.

Room Tip: The rear of the hotel has basically no view so front rooms are better.

My wife & I with another couple stayed at the royal for 2 nights- 1st- 3rd march. I had requested ajoining rooms on top floor looking onto the town as on a previous stay we were looking at a wall. The rooms were as requested & we were pleased with the location of them. To say the rooms were tired would be an unstatement. The decor & fixtures were dated but a comfortable clean bed was welcome. The absence of any toileteries except for 2 tiny soaps was surprising but no safety mat in the bath which had an overbath shower was just dangerous. We put 1 of the foot towels in the bath. On the friday nite after eating in the bar we went to sit in the foyerto hav a drink & relax when a boy about 10 years old & a girl about 12 years old started to kick a full size soft football in the area we were sitting. We watched this continue for about 10-15 minutes until the ball landed on the table we were at. I went to recpetion to ask someone to speak to them. I was told by the recpetionist that iy was the bar staff who had to deal with the situation. I went & told the young girl tending the bar & she said she would sort it out. As i went back to my seat there was now a man playing with the children who i took to be a parent. The bargirl came & spoke with the parents but the children kept on playing as the girl was still speaking. 3 futher visits to recpetion to ask to sort the situation proved fruitless so we went to bed. On saturday i spoke to the duty manager about the previous nite & he assured me it would not happen that nite as he would be on duty. I told him we would be dining eleswhere that nite. On sunday morning at breakfast the chef on duty was snapping at people when they asked for thier breakfast. He was raising his voice to elderly people & a very un comfortable atmosphere was emitting from the breakfast area. On the plus side the waiting staff were pleasent & courtious at all times & the merrill leisure center was both clean & enjoyable. Overall a very average stay in a very average hotel. Wont be hurring back to the royal any time soon but will definitaly be back to B ray

Firstly i would like to thank the staff.. when we arrived there we were upgraded and also had a lovely fruit bowl, bottles of water and sweets also a lovely birthday card .. what a fab surprise and a great touch!!!!
This hotel is great for everyone.. we had 2 kids with us and they loved the pool it was great very clean the room was very clean.. the windows need to be replaced and also the tiles need a bit of tlc in bathroom.. but over all very nice!
I was disapointed to see that the games room for kids actually charge for the use of games and were mostly all out of order.. the big thing for me was the car park!!! i was charged 10 to park there for 2 days.. as the car park is owned by another company..a bit much when we have already paid for your hotel!
Staff were great, mary in breakfast room is a lovely person... couldnt do enough for us :) over all enjoyed the stay nice hotel ..thanks again for the extras in room! fab xxxx
