I visited this hotel on a Newmarket Holiday. This well-known, old hotel is past its glory days and now feels in need of some updating. The staff are friendly and the food is OK but the people serving at table need training in how to serve food without throwing the plates at the guests. The alternative to a cooked breakfast is very scant - not a proper continental offering.
Don't get a room at the back or side which overlooks the trees as windows can't be opened due to midges getting in. Room 221 in the first week in July had a midge infestation and they are very hard to get rid of as they are immune to fly spray.
There is a lift but for the less mobile beware there are odd flights of steps around the place and no portering of luggage beyond the front hall.
Altogether the management needs to wake up and invest in some updating all round..More
