We stayed midweek on a voucher deal and had a choice of 57 hotels in Ireland to choose from for our break and all at the great rate for 3BB&1D of 200 euro! We choose Glasson solely on the recommendation of friends and the reviews of this web site.
Check-in was friendly and efficient and we were made feel very welcome indeed. The view from our lake front room is every bit magnificent and beautiful as the photos on tripadvisor. But the room itself was different from the pictures on this site - no where near as nice sadly. Another guest we met showed me their standard room and it was of a much higher standard. We had low flying swallows which had built there nest just above the window & resulted in bird poop blowing in on the inside sill when we opened the windows too wide. No bottled water was provided and the tea/coffee was only replenished once during our stay. By modern hotel standards the room was dated and the TV was tiny. Beds were ok, pillows hard and the towels and toiletries were refreshed daily.
The food steadily improved as our stay progressed and i know we weren't alone in complaining about it but at least we felt our feedback was being listened too. There was a set dinner for around 38 Euro ,no a la carte. If you like undressed green leaves you'll be delighted cause you get loads with everything cold or hot!! The potatoes are served with round scoops a la school dinners and the food layered above this. Woeful presentation. The recent addition of the new restaurant/banqueting area is very beautiful but i didn't enjoy eating my dinner from a tiny table and sitting through two large golfing groups do their prize giving! This open plan area serves as breakfast room, dining room, snack bar, lounge bar, etc
This is a golf club with accommodation and attracts golfing societies and corporate golf outings. Golfers will love this place and indeed they seem to! My husband enjoyed the hilly golf course(40euro). Others though will need to factor in the cost of buggy hire
In summary the hotel can do better. The quality of food and standard of housekeeping really needs to keep improving, allocating rooms depending on the rate paid made me feel like a second class guest. Front of house staff are trying really hard and compensate for many of the hotels shortcomings.
