We were drawn into this fine establishment by chance when we spotted a blackboard outside with Stowford Press badging and we cannily thought any pub that sells Stowford has got to know it's beers. What we found inside was an overwhelmingly fabulous experience, not just of the craft ale variety, but just as a great pub. Our hostess and manageress, Michelle, was so attentive and welcoming that we thought we had known her all our lives. An articulate and eloquent chatter, she really brightens up what is a warm, clean and friendly pub.
The Stowford was indeed on sale on draft and was delicious. There were 3 or 4 other Irish craft ales on tap and Michelle had a great knowledge of what each one brought in terms of flavour and preference and her recommendations on what may suit each of us in company were spot on. I can personally recommend the Offaly brewed "Bo Bristle" as a crisp and intensely fruit strong IPA.
This is a great pub and we were surprised to learn it has only recently reopened with Michelle at the helm. It feels like she has ran it for years. I would like to wish her and guys all the very best with The Malt House. It came as no surprise though to learn that the Athlone craft ale society meet here for monthly tastings. That says it all. If you like good beer and banter drop by this wonderful Athlone hostelry. You won't be disappointed. I've no hesitation in giving it a top rating.
