Description: The Locke Restaurant, Athlone is located in Athlone's historical quater and is set in an enchanting 150 year old church which stands proudly on the waterfront. The church was the original Anglican church in Athlone and dates back to the early 1800's. The church still retains most of its original fetures which now form part of the gorgeous restaurant that is The Locke. The Locke is situated beside the beer garden entrance to Sean's Bar, Ireland's Oldest Pub, Athlone Castle and is in the heart of the bustling nightlife of Athlone. The restaurant is one block away from the Dean Crowe theatre. It also also is within walking distance of some of Athlone's wonderful attractions, such as the Viking Boat Cruise and the Luain Gallery. The core of the restaurant, set in the captivating and magnificent church which dates back to 1858, now known as the Locke Restaurant is the second level with its high church beamed ceilings, warm, atmospheric lighting, panelling and rich carpet. The cosy snug bar located on the lower level has a dramatic feel about it. There is live piano and harp sessions every Saturday night in the bar area of the restaurant and all are welcome to come and enjoy it, even for a drink. The Locke Restaurant is a proud Irish Restaurant, specialising in fine Irish cuisine and seafood with a strong focus on local suppliers and produce. Our award winning Head Chef and his excellent team cook everything fresh to order and take great pride in the quality and standard of food they produce. The Locke Restaurant is open from Tuesday to Sunday served full evening, Al a Carte Menu from 5pm to 9.30Pm and There is also a great value Early Bird Menu available each day from 5pm to 7pm with 2 courses starting from €21.00 Per person. The Locke also has capacity for groups and parties with our private dining room options available for small or large groups and parties. We also have Group Menus and tailored packages for groups.

The setting is beautiful. The restaurant is a converted church which makes for a lovely dining experience. We chose the value menu which has a great selection and is more than reasonable 19.50 for 2 courses. We chose the chowder which had an abundance of fish with a lovely cream base and the thai beef noodle salad which was gorgeous. For mains we went for the steak (with a 3euro supplement) so worth it, and the lamb shank. The lamb was very tender and came with sweet potato which complemented it very well, but the steak stole the show it was as good as iv had anywhere, one of us ordered ours blue and it was cooked to perfection. All in all it was a great experience.

We ate at the Locke on the basis of the trip advisor reviews and weren't disappointed.

The building is stunning a really tasteful and original church conversion, that avoids twee and artificial history.

Our host Gavin was exactly what you come to Ireland for, charming, warm and happy to talk all night but also tactful and never 'mine host' as you sometimes get in the UK

The food was both great and great value, starter of seafood chowder was perfectly sized for a starter and so full of fish there was hardly any room for the liquid and the Guiness and herb bread a different treat.

We both had sea trout for a main and the quality was superb a generous serving of both fish and vegetables along with a caper sauce that pulled it all together, an underrated fish really brought to life.

Desserts were similarly superb my wife had a simple and light pavlova and I had a really lovely rhubarb crumble, I'm fussy on crumble and this was a good one.

Meal for two people - one starter, two mains, two desserts and one (very large) Irish coffee came to an exceptionally good value 60euro, obviously skipping wine (it's been a long day) kept the cost down - but we'd still count that as probably the best value meal we've ever had in Ireland.

If you're ever around Athlone, you really should make a point of visiting - we lucked out without a reservation - but if you have to wait it'll be worth it

Visited this restaurant on Saturday past. The restaurant has been converted from an old church and sits by the river. It is bright, interesting and cosy inside. Staff greet you like they know you, in a genuine and helpful manner. I believe that the staff make a restaurant and that is true of this one. The food was tasty and inexpensive for the quality. Worth a visit!

Dear OMcBelfast,

I am so happy after reading your review, you have put a huge smile on my face.
Your comment is our philosophy, we believe that a restaurant (even one as enchanting as ours) is only 4 walls and that it is the staff who make it special.

To have someone say this back to us, is just so special, so nice, so rewarding.

From all the team at The Locke.
I say, Thank you!!

Booked at the last minute and had a very pleasant evening. Food and service were faultless and the entire experience was very enjoyable and reasonably priced for the standard of food that was served.

Friendly, efficient service from Nora and her Team -- we will be back.

We had the most mouth watering salmon at this lovely friendly restaurant. Our main course was sooo good it was like reading a very good book, you just don't want it to end. But we were not disappointed with desert which were just as mouth watering. All accompanied by a wonderful bottle of wine. Well done to all on board and thank you all at The Locke for a great dining experience.
