Description: The Locke Restaurant, Athlone is located in Athlone's historical quater and is set in an enchanting 150 year old church which stands proudly on the waterfront. The church was the original Anglican church in Athlone and dates back to the early 1800's. The church still retains most of its original fetures which now form part of the gorgeous restaurant that is The Locke. The Locke is situated beside the beer garden entrance to Sean's Bar, Ireland's Oldest Pub, Athlone Castle and is in the heart of the bustling nightlife of Athlone. The restaurant is one block away from the Dean Crowe theatre. It also also is within walking distance of some of Athlone's wonderful attractions, such as the Viking Boat Cruise and the Luain Gallery. The core of the restaurant, set in the captivating and magnificent church which dates back to 1858, now known as the Locke Restaurant is the second level with its high church beamed ceilings, warm, atmospheric lighting, panelling and rich carpet. The cosy snug bar located on the lower level has a dramatic feel about it. There is live piano and harp sessions every Saturday night in the bar area of the restaurant and all are welcome to come and enjoy it, even for a drink. The Locke Restaurant is a proud Irish Restaurant, specialising in fine Irish cuisine and seafood with a strong focus on local suppliers and produce. Our award winning Head Chef and his excellent team cook everything fresh to order and take great pride in the quality and standard of food they produce. The Locke Restaurant is open from Tuesday to Sunday served full evening, Al a Carte Menu from 5pm to 9.30Pm and There is also a great value Early Bird Menu available each day from 5pm to 7pm with 2 courses starting from €21.00 Per person. The Locke also has capacity for groups and parties with our private dining room options available for small or large groups and parties. We also have Group Menus and tailored packages for groups.

“Second Visit - Just Gets Better”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed January 12, 2013

I visited this restaurant in November with a hen group and just had to return with my husband for our anniversary. The building is an old church and it is just so special as a restaurant. The athmosphere was so romantic. I was met at the door by Gavin who remembered me and was so curtious towards us. The food again was so good, I had the scallops and lamb and Rob had the rabbit and steak, both excellent but it was the deserts that made it for us and they were served to us by the woman herself, mammy o'shea. I promised i would return and i did. I cant recomend this restaurant highly enough and am already planning my next visit. Thank you locke restaurant and well done Gavin, Mammy and the team again from mad brenda!

BrendaC, it was so nice to have you at The Locke Restaurant again.

I am so happy that it was as good the second time around as it was the first time. Gavin is very happy that you enjoyed interacting with him again. He nearly ran off when he saw you coming again (just joking). It was a pleasure to meet Rob as well.

Your feedback, your recommendation and your continued custom means a lot to us. Brenda, thank you again from all of us at The Locke.

“Less is more”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed January 10, 2013

Ate here recently and while the food was fine it certainly didn't 'wow' us in any way but was perfectly adequate if a little pricey for what we got. They do have an earlybird menu so that might be the way to go if planning on visiting. The building is fabulous and I have eaten in it a few times years ago when it was 'Le Chateau' and it is still the very same. Service was good but the gentleman who placed the napkins on our laps needs to ease off. Our party found him to be overbearing and not very genuine. There is a difference between providing good service and wanting diners to have a good experience and bordering on ridiculous-we laughed about the napkins all night. It was patronising and to be honest, it is better to be warm, friendly and genuine to guests rather than to act as he does. Most people do not want pretentiousness when out for dinner just genuine friendliness. And as was mentioned in a previous response to a reviewer that he was just worrying about the diner's clothes?Patronising again......come on!It is just too much, less is more guys!

“Go raibh mile maith agat!”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed December 31, 2012

My wife and I ate here very recently. We had heard great things from a friend that had had their Christmas Staff party here only a week or so previous.

We would have to agree with other posters that the building itself is really breathtaking. It was an old church in a previous life, and with it's Gothic style windows and doorways, it certainly oozes character.

We were met by very friendly staff, one lady in particular, who went out of her way to offer us the early bird menu, even though we were there earlier than the advertised time. We very much appreciated this kind gesture, and preceded to have the 3 course menu for €25.... what choice...what value. I had the rabbit and inch black pudding, my wife, a vegetarian, had the vegetable soup. We followed this with hake and goats cheese potato cake respectively. Desserts were a tasty chocolate fondant and white chocolate and winter berry roulade.

If we were to be very picky, the fondant could have been warmer, the root veg with the hake were slightly underdone. But as I say, I am being VERY picky. The food was delicious and NOTHING was left on our plates going back to the kitchen.

One small thing that irritated us however, was the slightly disingenuous male attendant. I have a feeling he could be the owner, certainly more than a waiter. He had a certain air of pompousness about him that we both found uncomfortable and his phrase that he kept uttering to us and to other customers on the phone, 'go raibh mile maith agat' ('Thank you' in Irish), we found totally unnecessary. Is he a native Gaeltacht speaker.... he didn't appear to be.....are we.... NO!! Then why bother? There was no sense of any sincerity behind this greeting.

I totally understand we are in a recession and being nice to customers is key to repeat business, but less is more - don't verge on harassing customers with insincere 'sweet nothings'. The ordinary Joe soap ain't as gullible as one may think.

To summarize this is a fine dining restaurant with excellent quality food, set in a fabulous building. We will definitely return here again.

Dear JP09,
Many thanks for your review and wonderfull comments about our lovely restaurant. It is so nice that you came in on a recomendation, that means alot that people are complimentry of our restaurant. I am delighted that you found our gorgeous old church to be so captivating, we have taken great pride in its restoration and the detail within it.

Our excellent Head Chef, Niall Kavanagh and his team are very happy that you enjoyed the food so much, most imprtantly your wife, a vegitarian. They have noted your comments about the veg and I myself hve noted your comment about the foundant as it is my own recipe and dish.

As a service team on the floor, we genuinely take so much pride and interest in making sure that every guest has an enjoyable experience and evening with us (as you can tell from the server who served you). This interest, passion and genuine pride comes from the top down, from Gavin, who is very passionate about the restaurant and peoples experience of it. He has taken on board your comment about pompousness but believe me, he is not, he is as interested in making sure your meal and night is as good as it can be as he comes across. He is actually a native Irish speaker and being from Kerry, he again takes pride in using the lanuage when he can, he does mean nor does he want this to be disengenuous and he most certainly apologies if it came across that way.

We are an Irish Restaurant in a gorgeous Irish Church serving Irish Food and yes speaking some Irish too.

I thank you very, vey much for your review and feedback - we will certainly tke it on board and we very much look forward to welcoming you back again.

Warmest regards,

Ann "Mammy " O'Shea

“You won't find better in Athlone”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed December 28, 2012

Situated on the banks of the river Shannon in the left bank district of Athlone you will find the most charming restaurant. This has been about my 8th visit and it never fails to impress. We had a group of 10 visit recently and as busy as the place was the service was as fantastic as ever. Many of my friends had travelled from Galway and will be back very soon. The quality of the food is outstanding an the presentation very impressive. They have something to suit everyone from seafood, to steaks, to vegatarian options. The baileys chocolate tiramisu is to die for. The prices are very reasonable for such quality. We each had 3 courses and wine, teas and coffees and even leaving a generous tip had change from 50 euro per person. There is also a very good earlybird option. The ambience was lovely with the in house entertainment. We have already booked again for next week.
