I visited The Locke for the first time for a christmas get together with work friends.
We were seated at a large square table as oppose to a long one which was very pleasant as everyone was able to chat. I would definately consider the restaurant for a big gathering again for this aspect alone.
The food was good, I had the cod for main and it really was very good. I had the bruschetta to start which was fine, nothing special. I also had the cheescake which was badly presented and tasted like it has been sitting in a fridge for a day or two and had absorbed other flavours, it wasn't very pleasant.
The service was only ok. But really for the price (€25 for 3 courses) I wasn't going to complain. We were greeted by a man who told us we were in Irelands oldest church, etc, etc. and our waitress was pleasant. Then the man who greeted us came around one by one and faffed about with the napkins, placing them on our laps ceremoniously. This is fine if this level of service and attention to detail is going to continue for the entire experience, but as it didn't, it just seemed silly and on speaking to my workmates afterwards, actually annoyed us all a bit! For instance no one took our coats when we arrived, my wine glass was not topped up once, our water jugs were not replenished, no one asked us how are meal was while we were eating it, the wrong steak was placed in front of someone at our table only to be taken away again a few minutes later with no explanation, etc, etc.
One member of the group was vegetarian and he was not impressed with his meal. Everyone else was relatively pleased.
Look, the food was good and the setting itself is fabulous, the christmas decorations really add to the place and there was a great atmosphere.
Would I go back? Yes. Would I pay more that €25 for 3 courses? No.
I will definately recommend this restaurant to friends over Christmas and I will go back.
