“Lovely place but overpriced”
Reviewed March 25, 2008

We stayed in the Wineport for 2 nights over Easter as a gift from family. It is in a lovely location, right on a lake in the middle of nowhere. Our room had a balcony looking onto the lake (as do all the rooms I think) and it was a very peaceful setting to get away from everything for a few days. The place doesn't have the feel of a hotel as it doesn't have the usual big lobby/reception area - but has more of a reclusive atmosphere. The staff were very polite and helpful. However, for the cost of staying here I would have expected complete luxury, and this we didn't get. The bedroom was very small with poor wardrobe space and the only place for our luggage was under the bed.The bathroom while stocked with l'Occitane products, had a tiny shower and a porthole type window into the bedroom, which flooded the room with light if someone used the bathroom at night. We had dinner one evening which was fine, but not spectacular and very expensive for what we got. I had the vegetarian ravioli for 32 euro and it was more of a starter size portion. There is no spa or pool. We had a massage in the treatment centre which was fine but expensive and certainly nothing to rave about. Another minor quibble is that the hallways were freezing and the heat was only turned on the last morning we were there. While I couldn't say there was any major fault with the Wineport, for the price (285 e per night) I would expect that litte bit extra and we certainly didn't find it. I felt we were supposed to be so impressed by the illusion of luxury that we should ignore the fact that the basics just werent in place. I consider there to be much better value luxury getaways in Ireland.

Myself and my boyfriend stayed in the Wineport for 3 nights in January. Normally, it is quite expensive to stay here, but we got a FANTASTIC deal on the hotel's website, with 3 nights plus an evening meal.
The hotel is superb. The room size was only average, but had an impressive bathroom, with heated floors, bathtub, walk-in shower & large mirror. Complimentary Jameson whiskey on arrival, very comfy bed. Staff are extremely pleasant & helpful. There is a large balcony overlooking the lake, on which the hotel is situated on a lake, with absolutely stunning views. The location is remote enough, so no noise disturbance. Perfect location for walks/cycles around the lake, and you can hire a boat. Although remote, the hotel is 2 minute drive from the town of Glasson, which is nice for some pubgrub, and only about 10 minutes drive from the town of Athlone, which is ample for shopping trips.
The highlight of the trip was the evening meal in the restaurant. I have NEVER had such a high standard meal, and was in utter disbelief that this was included in the price. I would have expected to pay €200 (per person) for the meal alone. It was amazing, and service was excellent.
Unfortunately we never got to experience the spa facilities or the hot tub!

I have also been at a wedding in the Wineport. The restaurant was decorated in fairy lights and the room was magical. The ambience was just beautiful, right beside the lake.
In summary: Cannot wait to go back!!!

We are in love with Wineport Lodge! just home from a 2day stay, such a gorgeous place...arrived to find we had been upgraded and had a beautiful room on the lake edge, complete with balcony (although we didnt use it as there was snow fall and it was freezing outside!) Complimentary 1/2 bottle of wine in room, underfloor heating in bathroom, proper coffee and fresh milk in mini bar, L'Occitane toiletries...no charge for breakfast room service, really friendly staff...and the best yet-there was a mix up with an order for a taxi to the nearby Glasson village for dinner one of the nights, so the owner Ray brought us and organised a lift home for us too, now there's the personal touch.
A lovely romantic place to stay-enjoy!

Just back from a break in The Wineport Lodge, loved it. Totally relaxing hotel and staff very attentive and friendly. If you're looking for somehwere to totally relax then this is the place.
Our room was beautiful, very very spacious and a gorgeous bathroom with underfloor heating which kade it very luxurious. All rooms overlook the water so I'd imagine most have as good a view as we had.
We had dinner in the restaurant one night and it was lovely, great service and very tasty, well presented food.
The hot tub on the roof is a great idea, we were up there 2 mornings even though it was raining.
Overall a great place to stay to relax and enjoy good food and pleasant surroundings.

What can I say about this hotel well I think I have said it already it is ' Absolute Perfection' . My Fiance and I have been busy saving for what seems like forever for our wedding in a few months and I felt we deserved a little treat and booked a one night stay at the Wineport Lodge. We arrived an hour early and we were shown to our room straight away no problem at all.Our room was gorgeous ( The Wyndham Estate room) it was on the ground floor right on the lake and the view was breathtaking. The bed was the comfiest I have ever experienced at a hotel and the bathroom had underfloor heating and really well presented with a big bath and seperate shower. We both had full body massages in the spa and while a little expensive they were worth it. We ate in the restaurant and even though I was a little daunted by the menu at first ( Pigeon , eel etc) it was really delicious . The girl in the bar gave us menus and took our order before we went to the restaurant so there was no delay in us getting our meals. The atmosphere in the hotel was on of romance and tranquility so if you want to feel like you are in the middle of no where and lock the world out for a while look no further. On the down side it is expensive but I suppose it depends on what you are looking for . We will definitely stay again but probaly only for a special occassion.I found the waiting staff and the bar staff especiall a girl called Lisa only too willing to help but I felt the reception staff could have been a little bit more friendly . When we came to settle the bill it was a bit like pay your money and go. It would not stop us coming back but it is just something that taints the experience a little.

We had been for dinner in the wineport in Dec 2006 and were so impressed with the service and friendly staff that we chose here to stay for our wedding anniversary in January

It really is perfect, set directly on the lake and about a five minute drive from the centre of Athlone.

We stayed in the room "Margaux" which is right on the lake and very spacious and nicely decorated. We had breakfast in the room both mornings and dinner in the restaurant on the second night - food and service are faultless!

There is a nice lounge where you can relax with other guests but sometimes this is quite full.

A lovely place for a relaxing break and to chill out. Staff are very friendly and polite.

Attended a wedding in this hotel and it was superb!
Stayed 2 nights and wanted to stay longer.

The room was the nicest hotel room I have ever stayed in!
From the fluffy bathrobes, ipod type music, walk in wardrobe, luxurious bathroom, flatscreen tv, decanter of whiskey..... it had everything that the heart desires. We were at a wedding and didn't get to appreciate our surroundings - Will definately be back.

Breakfast was had in our room one morning - and it was a novelty to get a breakfast that was warm and tasty (room service breakfast can be a bit hit and miss in some hotels).
Waffles with maple syrup and crispy bacon.... I would highly recommend.

The meals on both nights were fantastic. Deserves all the super reviews it gets!
