“Amazing atmosphere”

Just back from a great trip to Wineport. Our room looked onto the beautiful lake ,decor ,size etc all excellent ,dinner was fantastic ..we sat looking out to the pier .The situation ,the evocative smell from the Swedish wood burners and the warm welcome from the Front Of House ..all added to the retreat like atmosphere .Breakfast top notch in morning with the "Irish times " at the door ..all added to a most pleasant stay .Still can see the swans on the lake in my mind's eye ...top marks to the staff and facilities ..the RTE "The Restaurant" doesn't do the restaurant justice as it is one of the finest in terms of views ,seating ,atmosphere .....excellent stay

Room Tip: All are excellent

I had the pleasure of staying in the Wineport a couple of weeks ago as a birthday treat for my husband, although initially they had checked us into the wrong room (i had booked a suite as a treat) that was rectified straight away. The suite was really nice, private balcony looking out over the water, big spacious room, very comfortable large bed, separate dressing room, big bathroom with large shower and roll top bath, fluffy robes and slippers provided. Every member of staff we encountered was so so friendly and chatty. We took a short walk into the local village shortly after we arrived and had some afternoon drinks before coming back and chilling out in our suite. Cocktails in the bar were a lovely way to start our evening and to peruse the dinner menu. We had an amazing meal in the restaurant that night, starters of crab and prawn and tapas (both so tasty and delicious) and then monkfish and lamb for mains which were absolutely perfect. My only disappointment was that we weren't booked in for a second night! We will definetly be back for a special treat again soon. Thanks to all for making our stay so welcoming and special.

Room Tip: I think the extra few euro is worth it for a suite, i think all rooms look out on the lake but not 1...

I've booked this place many times over the years but never had the good fortune to stay here until 28th September when I went with 3 friends for a Birthday celebration overnight stay. The first great thing was that the drive only took an hour from Dublin - which is what you want on a Friday night after a long working week. A nice touch is an open fire in a small seating area next to the reception desk - there was a lovely smell of burning turf when we walked in. We were greeted by a very friendly chap who showed us to our rooms. The hotel had been advised that there was a Birthday and they had put a birthday greeting in chocolate on a dish with some cookies in the room as a greeting. The rooms were very clean and comfy, if a bit snug. Ours was plenty big for our needs but I could see some people being dsisappointed. However, we were happy and the bathroom was nicely decorated and had underfloor heating which was welcome on a chilly night. The TV was large, modern and worked and the tea/coffee making facilities were better than usual, with a little cafetiere with coffee so you could make a little pot and a glass jar with cookies in it instead of the usual pre-wrapped biscuits. By far and away the nicest thing about the rooms are that they all look out on the water. It was just stunning. We had a gorgeous dinner on Friday night in a relatively quiet restaurant. The staff were very attentive and friendly without being over the top and overall we had a really relaxing, happy night out. We sat on the balcony early the next morning listening to the bird calls on the lake and watching the swans wake up to a beautiful fresh sunny day. I just loved it. As far as I can tell, there are two things to note. Firstly, the Wineport Lodge isn't really for children so families would possibly not have a great time here and secondly, the place is quite romantic which might put singles off. Personally, I coulld happily stow myself away with a couple of good books for a really relaxing break.

This is a beautiful hotel with breathtaking views of the surrounding lakes. When I stayed here it was January and a bit cold and damp, but when we arrived we were immediately upgraded to an even nicer room and had a wonderful stay surrounded with lake views. The restaurant is first class and we truly enjoyed our stay. I live only 30 minutes from the Wineport but I will definitely book another stay soon! Perfect for a romantic break.

Wineport had held a special allure for us since we first visited 4 years ago. We've always kept it in mind for a special occasion. And so we headed back there with high hopes. Unfortunately, the experience had its highs and lows.

Starting off, we were given a room at the far end of the building. Quite a large room with the expected views of the lake, but it does feel a little remote from the rest of the place. The bed was very comfortable and the built-in mp3 player was a nice touch. The balcony too was very nice, although the fact that cigarette smoke from guests in adjoining rooms swamped our room was a distinct negative point.

We were really looking forward to the dinner; our previous experience was outstanding. Alas, the meal this time was thoroughly disappointing. Starters for us consisted of greasy St. Tola goats cheese fondants and a bland Castletownbere crab and shrimp mayonnaise. The amuse bouche was simply tomato soup, nothing amusing for our tastes anyway. For the main course, we both had poorly seasoned and over-cooked fillet steak. The accompanying frozen chips, greasy onion rings and green beans with bacon were only passable. To finish, the crème brûlée was okay but the baked Alaska was dull and uninspired.

Overall, the service was particularly lacking. Staff could do with being more attentive and professional. Bringing a bread plate to the table with 2 pieces of brown bread and one white is something that needs attention. Also, stretching across someone’s meal to take away plates as soon as one person had finished detracted from the experience. But, to be fair to the service staff, there was only ONE person serving a relatively busy restaurant, with occasional help from a member of bar staff. It was really disappointing and one which we weren’t expecting.

In terms of the hotel itself, it could with some redecorating. The management should pay particular attention to the decking outside that’s lethal when wet. The spa however, provided an excellent experience. Overall, we can think of better ways of spending €500 for a night away. This certainly was our second and regrettably last visit to Wineport Lodge.

On arrival at this gem of a hotel we were shown to our room and wowed by the view of the lake, the size and comfort of the beds and the fabulous bathroom with the large free standing bath and generous walk-in shower. The audio system with such a diverse selection of music was a welcome addition to the flat screen tv with the large choice of channels. A full breakfast was served in our room at no extra cost. We did leave the room to play golf nearby and also to follow one of the recommended forest walks. After this, the hot tub on the roof was very relaxing. The delightful ambiance of the dining room and the efficiency and friendliness of the staff was surpassed only by the quality and quantity of the food. Next time we'll borrow the bikes and sit on the terrace wrapped in the rugs on offer and have a spa treatment. Two nights wasn't enough!

Room Tip: All rooms face the lake.
