My second visit to this hotel & like my first visit there, it was a pleasant experience. Parking, no problem as there were plenty of free spaces facing the lake. Check in was quick, informative, very friendly & very welcoming. The walk to the lift to the guest floors from reception is probably the furthest I’ve experienced in a hotel but not a problem. My room on the third floor was very big, bright, clean & comfortable with a nice view of Lough Ree. With loads of room it had a fully carpeted floor, nice room temperature & a very large window giving plenty of natural light. All positives with a great double bed & very good pillows & bed linen, very big full length mirror, folding luggage rack, wall mounted flat screen tv with plenty of channels, iron/ironing board, safe, small table & chairs, 2 wardrobes, tea, coffee, biscuits, hairdryer, wall mirror, workstation, drawer unit, tall freestanding lamp, bedside lamps, smoke alarm & an easily controlled air con unit. Internet was wired & surprisingly quick with free wifi available in the hotel’s public areas. Sleep quality was excellent thanks to the quality of the bed & bedding, the room temperature & the complete lack of noise from inside or outside of the hotel.
The bathroom was big, bright & very clean with fully tiled walls & floor & had a bath, big corner shower enclosure with fixed head shower with good pressure & plenty of hot water, dual flush toilet, plenty of towels, large mirror, dual voltage shaving socket, cream wash in a dispenser & small bottles of shampoo, body wash & body lotion.
I had dinner in the Waterfront Bar which was comfortable with nice decor & which I personally felt, was pleasant on the eye. It was busy but still retained a pleasant laid back atmosphere. The food was good & there were plenty of attentive & friendly staff on duty. For a starter I ordered the creamy seafood chowder, not what I would describe as creamy but the taste was something else, superb. For my main course I ordered the 8 oz homemade Irish beefburger which came with a generous portion of chips, onion rings & a nice side salad. Again, very tasty & there was no room left for dessert after it.
Breakfast, served in the Octagon Restaurant from 07.30 am to 10.30 am (11.00 am on sat/sun) was good. I went in around 7.45 & it was virtually empty, no noise, no queues & no problems getting a table & time to sit back & admire the marvellous sunset over the lake. Self service, the selection was good with full fry, cereals, porridge, waffles, pancakes, toast, yoghurt, cold meats, cheeses, pastries, croissants, jams, fruit salad, fresh melon pieces, fresh whole fruits, tinned grapefruit, apricot, pear & mandarin slices & prunes, orange juice, coffee & a selection of flavoured teas. There was also a small coeliac selection.
I had a good carvery lunch in the Waterfront which was quite busy but the queue moved quickly. I can’t comment on how difficult it was to get a table as our group had reserved seating. There was a decent choice available with meat & fish meals, salads, soup, sandwiches, wraps etc.
Checking out was as quick & smooth as checking in had been with the receptionist, Breda, being particularly friendly.
Complimentary daily & evening national newspapers were available from reception & the Octagon Restaurant. I was given two room key cards even though I was the only occupant of my room.
A very good hotel
