We were visiting Athlone while our daughter was taking part in the Community Game Final. We had a few hours to spare on the Saturday, so 5 families from the team decided we take this boat trip. It was a huge hit with the kids and the adults too, an informative and enjoyable boat trip. A must do while visiting this area.

We came to Athlone because we had read about this tour in the guidebook. While it was a good time, it was not worth the trip to Athlone by itself. Viking Mike, as the operator is locally known, owns the boat and runs tours every day at 12:00 and 3:00pm. His commentary includes discussion about birdwatching, wildlife, and environmental concerns, as well as amusing stories about viking history, but there`s not a lot to see except for the riverbanks.

I thought this would be a simple boat trip but it wasn't. Skipper narrating the Eco systems along the water, full bar and very interesting. Great for all families.

We booked a cruise on the Shannon with Viking Tours. This cruise on a viking ship takes about 75 minutes and goes up to Lough Ree and to the Hodson Bay Hotel. We found this tour to be very informative and learned a lot about the history, flora and fauna of the area. Blankets, tea and coffee are provided. This is a trip worth doing if you are in Athlone.
