Although the grand entrance and reception/lounge infer a much higher rating, this hotel is only 3 star. For that you get a once grand 19th century hotel impeccable cleanliness and a friendly staff.
Our room was newly refurbished and was on the first floor over the entrance. There was(unexpectedly) wifi. a large flat screen tv, comfortable beds (one double and one single), and a smallish ensuite with walk in shower. Only draw back with the room was that the three tour buses per night were parked directly underneath our window and the engines were often left running. There was also a lot of noise from passengers, and the unloading of suitcases etc. I suppose that if we had been early risers like the mainly German passengers this wouldn't have worried us at all!
Linen was changed frequently but the towels were very thin.
We had breakfast on the three mornings and there was adequate staff in the pleasant dining room. However you could be asked up to three times for your order. Unfailingly pleasant, staff were a bit like headless chickens. Full Irish wasn't great - as noted by previous travellers the food had been waiting around for a while. However the toast was warm, golden and plentiful, and tea/coffee were faultless and replenished frequently.
We counted at least 8 different nationalities amongst the staff and they were all friendly and enjoyed a chat.
We used a Groupon for two nights here, and paid the normal rate of €75 per room for the third night.
Amazing value. Would stay again.
