Really enjoyed the visit to the mines. Jonny was so friendly and helpful. Loved meeting the two dogs as we waited and picked up some nice things in the gift shop. Was great to visit such a small locally run attraction. It felt really personal just me my boyfriend and the guide. Loved the panning for gold after! Being able to see the old tools used, hear the links with the local village was great.

The mine is situated just outside Oughterard village Guilds take you down the mine and are very good at explaining how they mined for the fluorite, crystals and quartz and other minerals. The owners of the mine have excavated down to 135 feet (so quite a few steps down and up again) and are still in the process of going down further. There is a small shop on site and you can get a drink and snacks but no actual food is served.

We had a wonderful afternoon at the mine. Whilst waiting for the tour guide Johnny to finish the previous tour, Keith gave our children small lambs to cuddle and took the time to talk to us in detail about small scale sheep farming and how the farm had been turned into a film set for An Klondike.
The tour of the mine was very interesting. It's great to have a guide who is both enthusiastic and knowledgeable and endeavours to answer all questions - even if they are from a 7 year old and about minecraft (the game), rather than mining. The tours are usually in small groups, no more than 12 people.
The children (aged 7-13) also enjoyed panning for (fools) gold whilst we finished our picnic and coffee (picnic tables available).
The afternoon at Glengowla mine was one of the highlights of our trip to Ireland.

Family with 3 children under 11 had a fantastic visit. Family owned business...they are there to welcome you! Children loved visit to mine...very interesting and child friendly.
Their favourite bit was being at the bottom of the mine looking up.
They loved " panning for gold" too. They could have stayed there for hours!
Highly recommended.

As it was a wet day we thought we would pay a visit to the mines. €10.50 to get in so not a bad price.

No trouble getting into a tour of the museum and lovely wee guide gave great explanation of all the different rock and history.

Down into the mine hair net and hard hat on. Do wear a coat and good shoes as it is quite wet and cold.

Again the same guide did a great job of explaining everything. Won't go into too much detail but really interesting.

Not for the faint hearted as the climb back up is a bit of an effort for those who aren't as fit as they used to be.....

Little shop to buy gifts, momentos etc. Also an area to pan for gold.lol

We'll worth a visit.
