Owner description: Built by the O'Flahertys c. 1500, Aughnanure Castle lies in picturesque surroundings close to the shores of Lough Corrib. In 1546 the O'Flaherty's motto "Fortune favours the strong" and the powerful Mayo O'Malleys Motto "Powerful by land and by sea", were joined in the marriage of Donal an Chogaidh O'Flaherty and Grainuaile/Grace O'Malley. Standing on what is virtually a rocky island, the castle is a particularly well-preserved example of an Irish tower house. In addition, visitors will find the remains of a banqueting hall, a watch tower, an unusual double bawn and bastions and a dry harbour.

“Well Preserved”
Reviewed October 5, 2010

After a visit to see a friend in the Connemara Gateway Hotel. Myself and my parents went to see Aughnanure castle. It's a tower house with three floors. There was some function on that day were Eamon O'Cuiv was a guest speaker at it.
It's a very well preserved castle. I would advise tourists to look around the bawn of the castle which was my favourite bit of the self - tour. It was free in that day which was great and you are seeing a lot more in there than you think.

I loved this castle - it is very well preserved and is situated beautifully. I went to a million castles and homes in Ireland, and for some reason, this was my absolute favorite.

“Peaceful and Charming”
Reviewed July 15, 2009

I visited Aughnanure Castle during my recent trip to Ireland. We found the castle completely by accident whilst on the way to the Glengowla Mines and decided to go and have a look.

The property is owned by Heritage Ireland and so admission is very reasonable. We bought a guide of the castle for 50 cents but you can also take free guided tours.

The property itself if very well preserved and contains a lot of information about the restoration of the castle as well as its past history and that of the O'Flaherty family.

I would recommend the castle to anyone who has a spare hour to spend as it's a great example of one of Galway's many Tower Houses.
