Review of Aughnanure Castle

Aughnanure Castle

Attraction details
Owner description: Built by the O'Flahertys c. 1500, Aughnanure Castle lies in picturesque surroundings close to the shores of Lough Corrib. In 1546 the O'Flaherty's motto "Fortune favours the strong" and the powerful Mayo O'Malleys Motto "Powerful by land and by sea", were joined in the marriage of Donal an Chogaidh O'Flaherty and Grainuaile/Grace O'Malley. Standing on what is virtually a rocky island, the castle is a particularly well-preserved example of an Irish tower house. In addition, visitors will find the remains of a banqueting hall, a watch tower, an unusual double bawn and bastions and a dry harbour.

“charming”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed August 20, 2014

This castle is quite small but is nice for a short visit. The setting is beautiful, a bit of a drive in from main road but worth it. As we had small kids with us it was a bit of a whirlwind tour and would have been nice to take in the information posted around and enjoy the surroundings a little more. Overall a charming little castle worth an hour of your time.

“Off the beaten path”

Small site and small castle in a pretty setting. The staff was very helpful and friendly, and the written material was informative. If you are in the area and like castles, Aughnanure is a nice 30 minute stop.

Castle and grounds very well done for inexpensive cost. especially loved the 'guard dogs' who napped in front of the entranceway!

“Our first castle”

This was the first castle we visited on our trip. Great site and decent admission price. Not crowded which was a big plus in exploring the castle.

“Good example of an Irish castle”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed August 7, 2014

We visited one afternoon and spent a 30mins touring this classic Irish castle and its grounds.

The castle is well maintained and there are information boards which tell the castle's story and that of the family that owned it well if you take the time to read them.

Free car park. Entry fee to the castle.
