Review of Aughnanure Castle

Aughnanure Castle

Attraction details
Owner description: Built by the O'Flahertys c. 1500, Aughnanure Castle lies in picturesque surroundings close to the shores of Lough Corrib. In 1546 the O'Flaherty's motto "Fortune favours the strong" and the powerful Mayo O'Malleys Motto "Powerful by land and by sea", were joined in the marriage of Donal an Chogaidh O'Flaherty and Grainuaile/Grace O'Malley. Standing on what is virtually a rocky island, the castle is a particularly well-preserved example of an Irish tower house. In addition, visitors will find the remains of a banqueting hall, a watch tower, an unusual double bawn and bastions and a dry harbour.

A short walk through the woods and the ability to tour at your own pace. Although it was raining lightly we thoroughly enjoyed our visit.

Well preserved castle with interesting history boards. You get a real feel for the life and times of the Irish chieftains. Well worth the visit.

“Well worth a stop and some time”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed September 29, 2013

This castle was just off of our route from Ballyconneely to Galway and we stopped here as we were finishing up our recent visit to Ireland. My wife and I both really enjoyed the castle and the grounds around it. It didn't hurt that we had a beautiful day, I'm sure. Once we found it and parked our car, we enjoyed the walk along the river and around to the castle. There was a small fee to get in- perhaps 3.00 Euro each- and we went on a self-guided tour. The castle is a tower house which means it has a relatively small footprint but goes up several stories. The river plays a major role in the castle's history and you can easily imagine what it was like when boats were unloading provisions in the area leading down to the river- and I'm sure there were a few battles there too. The grounds around the tower house are quite large with remnants of the wall still visible. The history of the castle is well documented inside the building. There are also guided tours available at times and the ladies at the entrance way were very friendly and helpful. A beautiful spot and well worth your time if you enjoy visiting castles [and walking up and down the stairs- hold onto the rope!].

A good ruin Castle, but is ideal for a sunny or wet day, as although a ruin, it is covered over. A great piece of history.

“Beautiful location for castle ruins”

Great place to go to avoid the crowds and see a lovely old castle remains. The setting is lovely and a bit off the beaten path. The grounds are well maintained. Didn't do the tour, but our friends who did really enjoyed it.
