Review of Aughnanure Castle

Aughnanure Castle
Certificate of Excellence

Attraction details
Owner description: Built by the O'Flahertys c. 1500, Aughnanure Castle lies in picturesque surroundings close to the shores of Lough Corrib. In 1546 the O'Flaherty's motto "Fortune favours the strong" and the powerful Mayo O'Malleys Motto "Powerful by land and by sea", were joined in the marriage of Donal an Chogaidh O'Flaherty and Grainuaile/Grace O'Malley. Standing on what is virtually a rocky island, the castle is a particularly well-preserved example of an Irish tower house. In addition, visitors will find the remains of a banqueting hall, a watch tower, an unusual double bawn and bastions and a dry harbour.

“Fascinating history”

A great insight into the past in this beautifully restored tower house. Plenty of informative displays. A friendly welcome and a welcome cup of tea and cakes. Nothing to dislike!

“Our 3rd visit”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed May 16, 2013

We love this castle! I think one of the reasons is that we stay close to it (it's just up the road from the Oughterard Golf Club) and we walk there. It's always just so peaceful. If you're looking for a large grand castle, this isn't for you. Aughnanure Castle is located on a meandering brook (used to be a river) and has several building to explore and a very very narrow and fun winding staircase. It's a wonderful early morning or dusk walk if you just want to walk around the outside path.
They do charge to get in during regular hours. We never buy the program because there is a lot of information inside.

“Very Enjoyable Self Guided Trips!”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed May 12, 2013

Aughnanure Castle is set in the most rural landscape creating an authentic atmosphere for tourists. Booklets and boards are very informative. You are free to roam the castle and the grounds at your own pace allowing you to spend as much time as you like enjoying this atmospheric attraction!

“The Fierce O'Flaherty's Castle”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed May 4, 2013

The story of the O'Flaherty's was fascinating. What a fierce group! The castle is well kept, and you are allowed to wander it and its grounds on your own. The signs are very informative. We enjoyed visiting a not so touristy place, and we learned so much!

“Nice small castle on the way to Kylemore Abbey”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed April 24, 2013

The Castle is nice and small. It is located on the way to Kylemore castle..this castle is part of OPW Office of Public works. If you purchase their membership for 1 year it does cost 21 Euro but it is well worth it. With the membership you can enter this castle and more than 60 other historic places for free. The castle is located in town of Oughterard - small village. Very quite location. This castle is build next to the river.
