“A warm welcome on a rainy night”
Reviewed March 6, 2014

We drove from Cork to Grove House … through pouring rain and slightly mad West Cork drivers! It was dark by the time we arrived…. and it was truly a warm and gentle welcome we received. A roaring fire, delicious coffee (and quite a few wagging tails!). We appreciated that they opened the House for us before they were ready to receive guests … and we loved our rooms with views. Immaculate, clean, full of character and art, warm and comforting. Bathrooms were fabulous - I had the best shower in a long time. Will come again, during the season. Looking forward to trying Nico's food. Really felt at home and happy here. Would recommend to anyone.

We arrived at Grove House one cold and wet afternoon, Nico meet us in the hallway and was telling us where our room was when Katarina came out of a room in front of us, looked us up & down , then turned around and went back into the room without saying a word to us. This was how Katarina treated us the whole time we were there, she gave us the impression that we were in her way. The room was cold with no heating nor any where to make yourself a cuppa. Nico was always good with us, his mother WELL????????? We would not stay there again nor recommend Grove house , there are much better B & Bs around Schull as we found out.

What is there not to love about Grove House? I stayed with my travel companion for a two night stay in late August, 2013. The Georgian 1880s house is within a short walk from the village of Schull so I nearly missed it zooming into the village in a tiny rental car. Upon arriving, we were warmly greeted by hostess Katarina while her son offered to carry our luggage to our second floor room. The room was a large, traditionally kept square bedroom with a generous-size bathroom. Two large windows overlooked the chicken coop complete with rooster, ducks, chickens and a variety of local birds who appeared daily for the feed of left over bread and vegetables provided by the kitchen help. The breakfasts were the best we were to experience during our stay in Ireland. The others were not poorly done; rather, it is just that Katarina goes far beyond what is expected: hot menu or cold or both, complete with fresh bread, coffee and/or tea, fruits all served in a delightful breakfast room surrounded by large windows that let in morning light and sun (which was our case). Katarina hosted Luca Bloom, an Irish folksinger, in the house who performed both evenings when we were there. About 100 people from around the area came to Grove House in the evening and were hosted by Katarina and her staff who offered a wine social hour before and during the performances. It was a treat to just walk up the stairs to your bedroom after being entertained by such an enjoyable nationally recognized folksinger. The house provides a full size reading room and there are books stacked on shelves on the second story. Writers are regular visitors at Grove House and are warmly welcomed. The village of Schull is small, intimate and seemingly untouched by time. Unpack, unwind and lift a glass of Guinness or wine and enjoy an Irish small town experience.

We stayed for two nights and we had a great time. The house is so peaceful and charming it really got rid of all the stress. The location is perfect , overlooking the harbour and less than 3 minutes walk into town. The staff were so friendly and the food was gorgeous. Ideally suited for couples who just want to get away from it all. Can't wait to go back.

My husband & I stayed here for 3 nights in early July. We had asked for a quiet room so Katarina gave us one at the back, which made sense. Unfortunately the rooms with views over the bay are the ones at the front. Our room was above the kitchen & overlooking a new house that was being built. It also overlooked the hen & duck pen which sounds lovely, but believe me, they were really noisy in the mornings. As we were above the kitchen the room was very warm especially in the early evening when they were cooking evening meals. Our visit coincided with some great weather which was wonderful. Unfortunately it made our room unbearably hot & if we left the window open lots of flies came in. We had to use a fly spray that we luckily had in our car & spray the room every time we went out.
As lots of others have said, the food was gorgeous. Breakfasts were lovely with lots of choice & the evening meals were great too. We sat outside every evening overlooking the bay after dinner with coffee & a glass of wine - lovely! Katrina was a lovely host & recommended some walks for us to do, which were great. She also hosts music evenings there which we would loved to have been there for.
The room prices are reasonable so don't go with too may expectations abut the bedrooms & you won't be disappointed. Do ask for a room at the front.

Room Tip: Ask for one at the front overlooking the bay.
